It is said that coffee first found its way into India through a Sufi saint, Baba Budan who, having smuggled seven coffee beans from Arabia in his beard, planted these in the hills around Chikkamagaluru in the late 17th century. Fitting therefore that this coffee town is also home to a unique coffee store that offers customers an immersive walk through the history, brewing and experiential tasting of coffee. I visited World Of Coffee on a recent trip and tasted a host of coffee – new age artisan varieties like pineapple fermented, honey infused, foraged civet coffees, and traditional filter coffee. When in Chikmagalur, you must explore coffee and this store is a great place to start.

Hope you enjoy this heady brew of an episode. Take care; stay safe and strong. Happy eating!

Tasting:
Each of the coffees tasted left a mark. My favourites though, in descending order of preference – civet coffee, filter coffee, cold brew, fruit and honey infused coffee. And to taste coffee in a dessert form, the panna cotta is highly recommended.

The coffee panna cotta is priced at Rs. 170, and the artisan coffees around Rs. 170.

  1. There are various ways by which coffee is processed, most common process is washed, the other processes are fermentation in various fruits like orange, pineapple, while some are done with various types of honey like white, black and red. After a certain duration they are then dried and loaded into sacs and rested. Beans need to be degassed and then they are sent for roasting.

There are various types of Roast mainly Light Roast, Medium Roast and Dark Roast. Different roasts bring out different notes. Lighter roasts are generally fruity, medium has a mix of floral, fruity and chocolately notes and darker roasts are generally smoky. Traditionally south indian filter uses darker roasts.

There are various methods of brewing like the V60, Aeropress, Moka Pot and the espresso machine, V60 is preferred for lighter roasts as this method helps in bringing out the fruity notes, Aeropress is a versatile brewer it is almost and all rounder and can be used for almost any type of coffee. There are various factors that go into brewing a cup of coffee.

The world of coffee is fascinating .

Kripal Sir do try some specialty coffee there are very good cafes in Bangalore who will offer specialty coffee brewed with the above methods.
Happy to help anyone and everyone for anything related to coffee.

  3. Sir the civet cat is an endangered species, and it’s very very selective . It will only eat those coffee berries that have reached the prime of its maturity , vis a vis colour, pulp , door and flavour . The civet cats digestive system further breaks down the coffee bean based on its unique gut bacteria flora . After the bean is pooped out, the coffee bean further “cures “ itself on the forest floor and eventually becomes Kopi Luwak, the king of Sumatran and Java coffees👍🏾🙏🏾👌💪

  8. You asked a very pertinent question Kripal.. what’s the point of flavouring coffee ? As a coffee purist one can imagine why you finished off the episode with a “proper coffee” to wash your palate off .
