  1. This will help make sense of the movies. Gandalf is the same species of being as the Balrogs/Sauron before twisted by Melkor[Morgoth]. They are all Maiar (primordial spirits). Gandalf named OlĂłrin created by Eru’s Thought (extensions of Eru Îlluvatar himself whilst they had their own free will & individuality. He essentially got the chance to experience and study other parts of himself through this.) among the other Ainur before the Years of the Lamps roughly 9,000+ years before arriving in Middle-earth; In Valinor he was known as OlĂłrin.(Remember though he formally existed before the world existed and his form becoming Gandalf hadn’t happened yet. He was sent to Middle-earth in human form around the year 1000 of the Third Age. So his many forms had different ages in length of existing. He’s very cool right! Could he get any cooler!? đŸ˜Žâ€ïž Another thing is when he arrived in middle earth he was disguised as an elf & lived among them whilst they were unknowing & he became to be known as Mithrandir to the Quendi/Eldar❀ He could have very well dwelled with the elves far earlier just do to his curiosity & simple desire to explore and be around the firstborn (TheElves)
    Gandalf The Grey/White
Estimated at 15,000 years old (following his quote "300 lives of men, I have walked this earth"), It says that Gandalf was the wisest of the Maiar besides Melian herself. There were a lot of Maiar that were considered really great and powerful.

However, there is a much longer answer. Like Sauron(former name is Mairon) & the other Istari (the order sent around the same time & of which he was appointed leader but he being who he is & a student of the Vala by the name Nienna & Lorien(Irmo). Gandalf was a Maiar, an angelic spirit created by Eru at the beginning of time and therefor one of the many Ainur who sang the world into being & Eru just helped their creation take shape and basically stated “behold YOUR creation” & basically what happens in that world goes sort of preordained as by that song eons ago so really only the ages after Dagor Dagorath will truly be an age that isn’t full of strife and sadness and longing.

Also. These lamps are what were before even the two trees. These were Giant mountains but also like light houses but housing a great power but it may have also been where two special Maia lived that helped in the creation in the sun and moon after Melkor With eldrich terror Ungoliant killed the trees, so yea “Arien” is the Maia who basically exists with the sun and her brother and or lover of sorts is the one who wanders with and guides the moon. Of which that other Maia was “Tillion”

  2. Èowyn’s FULL SONG + Rohirric Eotheod language English translation below/ Èowyn sings at ThĂšodred’s “funeral”‱Now dear ThĂ©odred lies in darkness, most loyal of fighters. The sound of the harp shall not wake the warrior; nor shall the man hold a golden wine-cup, nor good hawk swing through the hall, nor the swift horse stamp in the courtyard. An evil death has set forth the noble warrior
A song shall sing the sorrowing minstrels of Meduseld
That noble cousin, who always held me dear
Now is held in darkness, enclosed.
(Now in in the language of the Èitheod)❀

    NĂș on thĂ©ostrum licgeth ThĂ©odred se lĂ©ofa
    hĂŠÂŽletha holdost.

    ne sceal hearpan sweg wigend weccean;
ne winfĂŠÂŽt gylden guma sceal healdan,

ne god hafoc geond sĂŠÂŽl swingan,

ne se swifta mearh burhstede beatan.

Bealocwealm hafað fréone frecan forth onsended

    giedd sculon singan gléomenn sorgiende
on Meduselde thĂŠt he ma no wĂŠre

his dryhtne dyrest and maga deorost.

She sings this part in the movie: Bealocwealm hafað fréone frecan forth onsended
    giedd sculon singan gléomenn sorgiende
on Meduselde thĂŠt he ma no wĂŠre
his dryhtne dyrest and maga deorost.

Éowyn is only heard singing the last four lines of the song, ending with the word Bealo, which in Old English meant "evil" or "harm". The first of those lines ("Bealocwealm hafað…") originates from the epic poem Beowulf, line 2265.)

  4. A bit of trivia. Viggo broke his toe when kicking the helmet, the scream was real. Most of the running scenes, Orlando did with broken ribs.
Christopher Lee as stated met Tolkien and had his blessing for Gandalf.
Tolkien survived World war 1 and the trenches of France. He hated allegory, but when writing his mythology made sure industrialism was always the enemy.

  6. According to Tolkien, Elves could even dream while moving about, "blending living night & deep dream." When Aragorn, Gimli & Legolas are running across the Plains of Rohan pursuing the orcs who captured Merry and Pippin, Legolas never sleeps, even stands watch while his wiped out Dwarf & Human companions are literally tuckered out and even while the other two are asleep.

That & out of the entire journey Legolas was both Stoic and ethereal but the one whose heart remained the lightest and kept the fellowship afloat in so many ways ❀. So it was weird how the film gave it all to Gimli! đŸ˜‚â€ïž

They have a debate after finding the brooch dropped by Pippin….. continue running through the night (& possibly miss other important signs in the dark), or rest overnight (and let the Uruks get further away from them). In the end, they choose to rest.

  7. The the dead marshes part includes Legolas’s Father; Thranduil, & Thranduil’s father Oropher, were to join the Last Alliance in from a different angle to achieve a certain war tactic but Oropher and others got waylayed by orcs & many corrupted men which lead to eventually Oropher dying there, this loss effected Legolas’s father so very deeply forevermore. The bond between he and his son is the same bond Thranduil has with Legolas. And the braid he wears is to honour his grandfather. I believe after his death braids became less common. A sort of respect thing I believe. Both his father and Grandfather lived in Doriath(Elu Thingol’s domain[ElwĂ«], which was heartbea of middle earth; Aside from Gondolin which held this mantle until it’s secret location was given up by a tortured elf who was the son of a very important mother who was the sister of the high king Turgon). All on a landmass called Beleriand that sunk under the sea after a set of disastrous events that lead to many greater outcomes much later on in the legendarium. This here is a whole set of stories of which also includes a quite a bit of Galadriel too but moreso other characters during this era. Of Beren And LĂčthien comes to mind and Children Of Hurin!! You’ll fall in love even more after the third movie. Then you can enter into the lore videos like Moviejoob and OmarioRPG have done reaction videos too. Amazing stuff.

One thing to add though is this scene resembles a lot from the other battle Tolkien was involved in called The Battle Of Somme. Look into it and tell me your thoughts.

  8. Aragorn’s ring once belonged to Galadriel’s dearest elder brother Finrod, Named Felagund by the dwarves he befriended, they gifted him one of their fortresses of Nargothrond and he even built it with them). He was the most famous Elf in the Legendarium aside from his uncle Fingolfin! It ended up being given to Barahir’s ancestors & Barahir is closest relative to Aragorn through the line of Arathorn! And they connect directly to the house of BĂ«or. Which all three houses of the Edain were found & befriended by Finrod. First to discover Men before anyone else !! Not even the Valar save Melkor long LONG ago. They’ve been aware of him for a very long time & have been fighting him almost as long as the elves did but with no help during those darker times before the sun and moon were even born into the world after melkor and Ungoliant killed the two trees of silver and gold in Valinor.

By the time the Gondorians lost EĂ€rnur the Anorian line of Elendil got their cheeks clapped so hard they were reduced to a lesser tribe who had lost a shit ton of status and a lot of symbols of their power like the Ring of Barahir or Narsil. The Gondorian Stewards, especially those like Denethor, looked down on their northern brethren as pretenders and foreigners.
Aragorn not only had served in Gondor's army for a time but was chosen to carry on many of the ancient symbols of the line of Elendil like Barahir and reforging Narsil into AndĂșril. Throw in a fancy banner made by his elf GF and he had the symbols and treasures of a king. What happens to Denethor also contributed along with Faramir willingly surrendering his authority to Aragorn helped.

An heirloom of the Ñoldor/ Vanyar+Teleri (Galadriel and Finrod’s kin) But as I said, it's got SO much value. Makes me want to say something similar to what Gandalf said about the mithril vest that was more valuable than the shire itself. Hahaa And so of course Aragorn for many reasons knows the history of that very ring he wears. I believe as it belonged to Galadriel’s brother, either she gave it to him or it made it down the line directly from Aragorn’s mighty ancestry

  10. Technically Gandalf did die. But Gandalf, like Sauron, is a being called a Maiar and they’re immortal. If Gandalf dies on middle earth he awakens in the undying lands and can be sent back. It’s also why Sauron is still alive, the ring basically weakened him greatly but he can never die

  11. The character of Sam is based on the batmen of world war I, enlisted soldiers who were the personal servants of officers, like Capt. JRR Tolkien. Tolkien was very much a lover of nature and anti-industrialist. In his lifetime, England became much more industrialized. He loved the woods. He also fought in World War I, particularly the Battle of the Somme. Industrialization and war and his Catholic faith are probably the greatest influences on his writing, which he intended as a myth of England and as a backdrop for the languages that he invented. There are many people more educated than me probably on this thread that could give you a much more detailed explanation.

  12. Arwen is Galadriel's granddaughter. Her mother Celebrian, Elrond's wife, was captured and tortured by Orcs, which you can get idea of what that must have been like from Merry and Pippin's captivity. Celebrian couldn't really recover and went by ship across the sea to the Undying Lands. If Arwen chooses to stay with Aragorn, she basically is giving up a chance to ever see her mother again. Death, by the way, is called by the elves the Gift of Men, because humans die and go to spend eternity with Eru Illuvatar, the One Father. Galadriel has lived over 6,000 years about now. Arwen is well over 2,000 years old.

  13. Gandalf was "sent" back, just like Frodo and Bilbo were "meant" to have the Ring. There is a higher power at work for good in the world. And that is an encouraging thought. Gandalf'stask, btw, is to "light a fire in the hearts of men," thus all his "magic" has to do with fire, like fireworks for Hobbits and lighting up the Mines the Moria. Most of his "power," however, is in the counsel he gives, but he rarely issues commands, you'll notice. He is a Maia, an angelic creature, disguised as an old man, same as Saruman, who was the leader of the wizards — there are three others not in this storyl — the balrog and Sauron. . In the book, as I recall the Hobbits comment that the new Gandalf laughs more often than the old one.

  14. Your observation that the environment is one of the things been stressed in the story is definitely true. The author Tolkien grew up during the time, when the English countryside was going through industrialization. He saw the growth of cities and factories and the impact of that on the environment. It was some thing he felt very strongly about. And you get the theme of the natural world versus, the mechanical, or mechanization in the story. Tolkien also was famous for his love of trees. The Ents versus Saruman is a big part of that, especially once Treebeard saw what it happened to the forest. Also, there is a story that Tolkien went to see the play Macbeth when he was a child, in which there is a scene where soldiers use sticks and leaves to disguise themselves and blend into the forest in order to move up to the castle unseen. Apparently Tolkien was very disappointed that the trees were not actually moving on their own. And that is supposed to be one of the reasons behind the Ents.
