The current rise of viral cave-death videos and how they affect us

Read for my thoughts below !
Thank you to my sister, Georgia for helping me out with some of the shots on this one. 🙂

I might disable the comment section. It is due to my own fear that I will be corrected on things I am already acutely aware of, but also general scrutiny. I created this video for fun and general commentary only.

It took 3 weeks to make and if I could do it again, I would;

1) hold the mic to my face instead of having it nestling on my clothing for better sound in the beginning
2) honed down on where I got my statistic of ’12’ from for callouts per year. I spoke to cave rescue a few months prior to this, and they mentioned how they had 12 callouts a year, avarage. However, this could have been for over the pandemic period, so this number might actually be wrong. Futhermore, this might even be just in Derbyshire. My apolagies.

Clarifications:
1) The people who make cave death videos have a deserved space on the internet, I’m not telling you to not watch them, any creator that makes this content can feel free to contact me and ask me questions. I’m here to help.
2) Whilst I wanted to (and even filmed) explaining how the man died from the second video, I felt that would be too alarming for the family and friends, who I know might watch this video. I consequently cut it out.
3) nice to be back:) I’ll take another 2 week(ish) break because I’ve got a lot to work on!

Thanks for understanding that I needed a break, because I had so much to do! In this time I have finished and released my next book, created an hour long video essay, revised for a big test on Radon in caves, and have a 2 week work experience at the BBC! 🙂

  1. I remember hearing about the John Jones incident when it happened. It terrified me and gave me the impression that that sort of caving (squeezing) was reckless. Then, I found this and other caving channels, and it completely changed my perception. Yeah, it's dangerous, but so is anything. It's probably not as dangerous as driving, and (like driving) there are precautions you take to counter the dangers. I also got to see the payoff, such as the beauty, community and sense of accomplishment. I wish this side of caving could be viewed more by the general public.

  2. My first exposure to caving was the nutty putty video, it scared me a bit ngl. However, after watching your videos, I realised caving can be done safely and it seems fun though it's not something I'm particularly interested in doing I do have a bigger appreciation of it now. (I mean tight space caving; I love to go to big caves to explore)

  3. I think you filled this video with sound and well-worded arguments, and I was interested and entertained from start to finish.
Perhaps it's because overly dramatic videos are not my thing in the first place, but I was really pleasantly surprised by your example; using Crimewatch footage and actually visiting the location gave the segment a sort of documentary-like feel that I really enjoyed.
Thank you for the effort you've put into this unusually long (for you) video! 🙂

  4. Great video, Elise. I have watched some of the "cave death" videos on occasion and in the future, I will consider what you've offered here, before or while watching such videos. Great job as always! Your content continues to set a high standard!

  5. I've seen a lot of the 'Caving Gone Wrong' videos in recent weeks and I'll admit it scared me to the point where I said to myself that I would never dare to try caving at all.

In one hour you have reversed this fear and helped fix the psychological damage caused by clickbait disaster videos. Thank you 🙂

  6. I’ve done the Wild Cave Tour @ Mammoth Cave in KY. It was a six hour guided tour. We wore knee pads & helmets w lights. Although I know it’s very scary for some, you are much safer in a cave than you are on, say, a hike to the summit of a mountain.

  7. It was the nutty putty cave stuff that truly terrified me a while back, I mean when I leave this world Id rather be thrown to the hippos, silverbacks or basically anything here in Australia but I'm not going out via cave, watching people deep underground squirm thru cracks for fun makes me physically ill
