In this video, we dive into the fascinating world of amphibious assault submarines. While the concept of these submarines, which are the theoretical equivalent of amphibious assault ships, has been explored by both the United States and the Soviet Union, none have ever been built. However, converted or standard submarines have often been used to transport small groups of soldiers or supplies.

In the Soviet Union, submarines played a crucial role during World War II, shuttling weapons, supplies, and special forces into besieged areas or behind enemy lines, notably during the siege of Sevastopol. After the war, the Soviets proposed Project 621, a landing ship-transport submarine that would have been one of the largest submarines of its time. It was designed to carry a full infantry battalion, tanks, trucks, cannons, and even fighter aircraft. Unfortunately, Project 621 was never built.

Undeterred, the Soviets continued to explore larger and more ambitious designs, such as Project 664 and Project 748. These submarines were intended to have additional capabilities, including underway replenishment for other submarines and submarine rescue. However, the complexity of combining these various functions, along with the need for nuclear propulsion, proved challenging, and these projects were eventually abandoned.

Meanwhile, in the United States, preliminary designs for submarine transports were also explored. In the 1950s, a massive 10,000-ton submarine capable of carrying 2,240 Marines was proposed. However, the extent of the U.S. Navy’s design efforts in this area never reached the scale of the Soviet projects. Instead, older submarines were often refitted for transport purposes, particularly for covert operations and special forces deployments.

Although the amphibious assault submarine remains a theoretical concept, the ideas and lessons learned from these projects have influenced subsequent developments in the field. Join us as we explore the history and potential future of these remarkable vessels and their impact on naval warfare.

Ok so you really came all the way down here. Does anyone even read this? Thats unreal. I’m very impressed. This video as actually really hard to make and took like 3 months with several amazing people. I had to find a genius from India to render the water and I don’t think anyone will even notice! Thats the burden of film making I suppose but that’s the point of special effects… your not supposed to notice them. Just like you haven’t noticed this. At the end of the day I’m a creator and a person just like you writing this from the house I share with my parents. I’m not making billions off this, but I’m still SUPER lucky to have people like you (yes you reading this right now!!) that clicked on my little video. Thank you so much. You are special and have value. And even though it was one little view… I made this video for you. have a wonderful day.

  1. World In Conflict (1:03) and Freedom Fighters.
two games that pull from this "what if" concept, one storming Seattle and the other NYC, with these massive transports.
the opening of Freedom Fighters with these subs emerging and the soviet chorus singing was phenomenal.

  2. "…deploying troops and tanks, plus 2 anti aircraft guns right in the middle of an enemy force, which is just plain cool!"

So Russia starting it's invasion in the arctic and attacking the U.S., likely leading to all out nuclear war would be "cool"?

  3. No country can invade the USA. They do not have the logistical capabilities. The terrain of the US is like other. West coast in California, they would have to deal with gangs that are heavily armed, regular citizens that have weapons and hunt. Plus, the amount of military we have on the west coast. Then, there is the mountain range to get over to go beyond the California. Which leads into a desert. Then the Colorado Rockies. The US is just too big, for Russia or China to invade. Plus, there are millions of military veterans that are armed, which creates a massive army/militia that knows their own terrain far better than foreigners. Then, the logistics of maintaining supplies to the troops as they go across the country. There are millions of people all over the west coast, no country in the world has a large enough army to be able to control that many people. For the east coast, similar obstacles and challenges. Russia only has one Aircraft carrier, and the last time Russia deployed it, it caught fire while it was still in the bay and had to return to dock. It has been in dry dock ever since for repairs. Russia also does not have a large Naval Fleet to embark on an invasion of the US. The US Naval Fleet is spread out throughout the Pacific Ocean. In Alaska, the national guard, in many areas are made up of Alaskan Natives, and they train to defend the state from invasions from Russia and China. They know the terrain far better, and can survive it, where Russians…nope…And Alaska has two large Army bases, along with two large Air Force bases, all there to defend off in any invasion.

  4. Soviet subs of that era were notoriously noisy even if they were small streamlined attack subs. A giant poorly streamlined box cruising along at shallow depths because of all the doors cut in the pressure hull, that's powered by a Soviet naval reactor and filled with Russian troops banging around inside? The SOSUS array would have heard them coming from the other side of the ocean. If a Los Angeles class didn't follow them the whole way and put a torpedo up their posterior at an appropriate moment a bomber would be circling overhead waiting to drop its load as soon as the conning tower poked through the ice.

So Ukraine made a duct tape row boat 🚣‍♂️ like a drone like and started sink few Russian $$$ Millions ship and few sink or damage by Ukraine Duct (duck)tape drone boat? And Russian Submarine just look good on designing (paper)and we can only wonder if it can float underwater or more like ThinkerSink too the bottom of Sea?🤣

  6. They may have giant subs but according to how the Russian navy has been losing so many ships to Ukraine which has no navy I'd say the Russians lack the know how to use these giant subs. So all they are is a bigger target to be destroyed. America may look foolish because of their embarrassing political situations but don't be fooled, they are still the world leaders in warfare.

  7. Russia's large subs are exceedingly expensive to build and maintain… and Russian subs are not very quiet. The US has little trouble tracking them. Russia does not really have the ability to project its power around the globe like the US has. It has only one aircraft carrier that has been in drydock for 6 years and actually caught fire and it is not currently being repaired. They also only have a few landing ships and has been loosing most of them in the Baltic Sea during their war with Ukraine. The 6 there have been destroyed or damaged with 4 of them being completely sunk. The Amphibious Assault ships the US has like the America and Wasp class ship can carry twice as many troops and carries up to 20 F-35B. They also carry the vehicles and artillery and have landing craft including 2 large hovercraft in their deck wells. They also have amphibious APC and helicopters and/or Osprey to air deliver troops. They also carry multiple layers of air and missile defense and helicopters able to detect mines and submarines. Combine these 10 ships with the US attack subs, missile destroyers, and 11 Super Carriers (Ford and Nimitz class). The US also has bases and allies scattered around the globe. The US is basically the only country that can project its power around the globe.
