  1. This was also post-USSR 90s America. This kinda stuff got WAY more attention back then because things were “boring” back then. There wasn’t the constant political circus or war on terror to focus on at all times and everyone was arrogant and ignorant believing it was the “end of history”. See also how much attention was given to Dale Earnhardt’s death.

  2. The closest thing we had to an OJ scenario was the Casey Anthony trial. Where she (allegedly) killed her daughter, went partying for a couple days, and then reported her missing. That trial was a 24/7 event.

  3. People have to remember OJ was more than a famous athlete, he was in film and tv series, he was the face of Hertz. He was everywhere back in the day.
I was an electrician working on L.A. City Hall earthquake repairs/renovations when the trial was going on and still have picks of all the news vans across the street taken from the scaffolding on the outside of the dome.
Just noticed the trial started on my (30th) birthday as well.

  4. That's literally what happened to Michael Jackson though. There's no actual evidence anything ever happened to anybody.

It's super messed up the more you look into it in a truly factual way. The guy just got scammed and since he was weird, the media just went with.

  5. Saying cops should only pursue suspects with a helicopter is such a braindead take. Yea, the cops pursuing could cause accidents, but waiting for the suspect to run out of gas or willingly stop allows for far more opportunity for them to harm someone

  6. Pretty sure people have been sentenced to death in the US on much much much less evidence. They brought up Race in the trial, and fear of race riots might be why he got off. If there's one thing we can learn from this it's that race is secondary to wealth.

  7. "What's the charge? Eating a cookie? A sweet, succulent cookie?"

Also, there absolutely have been chases where both law enforcement and media helicopters got evaded. I've seen two videos specifically. One from Houston where the guy had a souped up Dodge and just gunned it faster than the helicopters could go. He only got caught because he ran out of gas after the choppers also had to go back for fuel.

The other guy was somewhere in Cali, and did some kind of fucking magic trick after the sun set, losing both the cops and the media behind an overpass.

  8. I'm too young to know enough about this deal. What was OJ trying to do in running? When you have several helicopters, 100 police cars, and like 200 million people watching you on TV driving down the freeway, is anyone stupid enough to think you'll get away? Did he have a plan?

  9. I was 11 when the murder and car chase went down. The next year, at the end of the trial, we watched the verdict live in class, I think 7th grade. Very weird. Most of us didn't really even know who O. J. Simpson was. I only knew him as one of the guys from the Naked Gun films. I remember when he was acquitted, my reaction was basically just "awesome, he'll get to make more Naked Gun movies."

  10. What convinced me OJ was guilty: During his deposition he was asked about the shoeprint at the crime scene. He responded, "I would never wear those ugly ass shoes." Then they showed him a picture of himself wearing the shoes. He identified himself and the shoes. They asked him again if he owned the shoes and he said he had no explanation. He also said he didn't beat his ex wife, the murder victim, and the pictures of her taken by the police when she reported he assaulted her were photos of her wearing make-up for a movie.
