I'd put "Showtime/Storytime", the live album of course, above all of these.. by a very large margin 😁
Hi….I think overall your rating is not bad…solid choices….DPP and Once are my top albums also…then Oceanborn and Imaginaerum…but the albums I listen to the most are now Yesterwynde an..d Endless forms Most Beautiful… albums I love personally….Human/Nature I was a bit disappointed first …but it grew on me…I think Nightwish not really has a bad album…even Angels fall first I like….Thx a lot for your work on doing this
Yesterwynde and H./N are my favs. But ,every has his own opion. I prefer the "New Nightwish " to the "Old Nightwish ".
Thanks! So there is somebody else how also thinks same like me. It has been painfull to see where band is heading.. not sure is that Tuomas will or is it because Floor is not the best studio singer and that limits.
1. Once
2. Dark Passion Play
3. Yesterwynde
4. Human || Nature
5. Oceanborn
6. Imaginaerum
7. Wishmaster
8. Century Child
9. Endless Forms Most Beautiful
10. Angels Fall First
"Enigmatic… richly coloured" – best descriptor of Yesterwynde, new-era NW
Being practically raised by Nightwish for decades, I can tell you that growing up with the fandom is exactly like growing up with divorced parents. There is no winning with every album release.
20 years ago I was the kid enamoured with the "power-centric" older NW; now in my 30s, I find certain themes like Century Child nostalgic but rather cringy lol – I'm far past the point of romanticing about unrequited infatuation as an angsty teen (who used to cry out Ever Dream about my first crush lol)… My taste in music and art has grown to be more progressive and nuanced. This is why the direction of Human Nature made me fall back in love with the full album experience of Nightwish after years away. Now Yesterwynde has granted me the dynamic kaleidoscope along with full integration of the orchestra and the metal as the most complex NW album to date. As my favourite band for decades, I feel like Nightwish now have evolved to meet me where I've arrived on my own musical journey! There were years where my path slightly diverted – I thought Imaginaerum was just a little "childish" DPP-light and I felt EFMB was mostly predictable Eurovision-esque songs supporting one great epic. Human Nature took a sharp turn for progressive songwriting and Yesterwynde continued with further steps – I simply never get tired of listening to these albums time after time!
I also love listening to the instrumental and orchestral versions of these albums. My single most listened-to disc is probably the Dark Passion Play orchestral instrumental version – I learned to play along every song on the keyboards lol.
"Bring Beauty Of The Beast back on the setlist… I would die!" – I fully echo this sentiment 💯
Sounds like we mostly agree on the tops and bottoms of the tier list! Once and Dark Passion Play are absolutely definitive in my musical identity, I doubt any album from any band could surpass them without living in my heart for years. We just have diametric taste for the middle ranks I guess.
Sorry for the multiple comments lol. I find your perspective most insightful and enagaging out of all the reviews on YT.
1. Once
2. DPP
3. Imaginaerum
4. Century Child
5. Yesterwynde
6. Oceanborn
7. Wishmaster
8. H/N
9. EFMB
10. AFF
Though each album quite different, I like all of them almost equally except AFF
Great and very respectable ranking from you as a true fan 👏
To each their own of course, but for me you have the three Floor albums ranked way too low at 7, 8 and 9. They are in my top five. I do agree with you regarding Troy's vocals though and Marko is so badly missed on Yesterwynde. I think there are many of us who'd agree with you about Sagan. Apparently it wouldn't have fitted on to a single CD due to timing constaints so it was left off. Personally I could've easily lived without The Eyes Of Sharbat Gula in favour of Sagan. BTW, totally agree with you about Beauty OF The Beast – it should've been brought back into the set list ages ago. Of the Tarja era, it's my favourite song, eclipsing even GLS.
My ranking as follows…1 EFMB. 2 Human Nature. 3 DPP. 4 Imaginaerum. 5 Yesterwynde. 6 Once. 7 Oceanborn. 8 Wishmaster. 9 Century Child.10 AFF.
Yesterwynde would've been higher (#3) had it not been for the choice of the mix.
Hey man, that's almost exactly my album rating. Only I'd give DPP album a B rating, it's too uneven, and I haven't listened to Yesterwynde yet. But HN is one of weakest, bland and boring albums in band's discography for sure.
I have to say I have been very disappointed in the mixing on Floor's 3 albums. Floors voice in the mix seems very low in comparison to the live performances. Certainly in the last album Tuomas said that he controlled the mixing and I wonder whether he is emphasising the music rather than the singing.
1- Yesterwinde
2- Imaginaerum
3- Human Nature
4- Endless Forms Most Beautiful
5- Once
6- Dark Passion Play
7- Century Child
8- Wishmaster
9- Oceanborn
10- Angels Fall First
And the fact that one album is lower on the list doesn't mean I consider it bad.
As far as I am concerned, Nightwish is just 50 shades of greatness.
