Few great pianists have divided opinion like Friedrich Gulda, the jazz-loving Austrian maverick whom some critics called a “musical terrorist”. But on one point, everyone who heard him is agreed: Gulda was one of the supreme modern interpreters of Mozart, the composer he regarded as the “greatest of the greatest”. This recital from the 1995 Münchner Klaviersommer (just five years before his untimely death) finds him at the height of his powers in two of Mozart’s finest mature sonatas, K.333 and K.576, as well as the tremendous D Minor Fantasia, K.397. Carefully chosen excerpts from earlier sonatas frame a programme that’s essential listening for anyone who loves Mozart – or, indeed, great pianism at its most original and sublime.
