Carmen-Fantasy for flute and piano. Francois Borne

During the last part of the 19th century one of the most popular musical forms was the opera fantasy – pieces for one or more instruments using themes from well-known operas as a basis for brilliant variations. They were usually written by performers themselves to show off their own technical wizardry.
A great many flutists of the period wrote similar fantasies and one of the finest of the genre was the Fantaisie sur Carmen by Francis Borne, solo flutist of the Bordeaux Symphony.

This video was recorded in January 2023 in Regensburg, Germany. This recording does not contain editing cuts and the Audio is the real one from the concert hall. The grand piano is a Stenway & Sons and the flute I play is a Brannen-Cooper with a Lillian Burkart headstock.

Durante la última parte del siglo XIX, una de las formas musicales más populares fue la fantasía operística: piezas para uno o más instrumentos que utilizan temas de óperas conocidas como base para variaciones brillantes. Por lo general, fueron escritos por los propios artistas para mostrar sus propias habilidades técnicas.
Muchos flautistas de la época escribieron fantasías similares y una de las mejores del género fue la Fantaisie sur “Carmen” de Francis Borne, flautista solista de la Orquesta Sinfónica de Burdeos.

In der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts war eine der beliebtesten musikalischen Formen die Opernphantasie: Stücke für ein oder mehrere Instrumente, die Themen aus bekannten Opern als Grundlage für brillante Variationen verwenden. Sie wurden normalerweise von den Künstlern selbst geschrieben, um ihre eigenen technischen Fähigkeiten zu demonstrieren.
