Can You Grow Bamboo In The Desert?

In this episode we will answer the question, Can You Grow Bamboo In The Desert?

Hi – We are Douglas and Keri! In May of 2022 we quit our jobs and sold our home in Denver, Colorado to move to our 36 acre off grid homestead property in Cochise County, Arizona. Follow along with us as we build our homestead from scratch!

(UPDATE 7/21/2023: Get our FREE EBook “9 Steps To Getting Off The Grid” at https://www.TwoRebelsOffGrid.com Having been off grid for a year now, we think these 9 steps are CRITICAL before you start your off grid journey!)

We made the journey (about 1.5 hours one way) from our homestead to the Bamboo Ranch in Tucson to talk with the owner, Holly, about growing bamboo and yes, you CAN grow bamboo in the desert! If you are interested in visiting the Bamboo Ranch, check out their website here: https://www.bambooranch.net/

We never imagined we could grow bamboo in the desert…we’ve always pictured it as a “tropical” sort of plant, but it turns out you can grow it here…Matt and Holly have been doing it in Tucson since 1986!

We also are trying to film in interesting locations throughout Cochise County to try and switch it up a bit and show you the great places our County has to visit and give you all a visual break from our homestead 🙂

Today, we visited Courtland, Arizona, another Arizona ghost town with an interesting past! Courtland was founded in 1909 and was named after Courtland Young, one of the owners of the Great Western Mining Company. Courtland was founded because of the abundant copper in the area. It is in the foothills of the Dragoon mountains about 15 miles from Tombstone, Arizona. At it’s peak population, Courtland had 2000 residents! There are still quite a few nice ruins you can visit including several houses, a jail (which is where we filmed from), an original sidewalk, and other ruins. Courtland is located on the Ghost Town Trail Road and we loved checking it out. You will have to look past the graffiti that people have painted over the years 🙁

So, to answer the question of whether or not bamboo can grow in the desert…yes, it absolutely can! It also turns out that Richard from @TerraformTogether has also visited the Bamboo Ranch and completed a cool project with some bamboo canes! If you haven’t had a chance, you’ll want to check out his channel!

  4. man, the bamboo I've cursed and eradicated! But I see why it is a great idea there! Now, it was interesting to know more about the history of the old building you visited, but I want to know what you think the structures are made of and what those old plasters are. So sturdy and thick. Cement? Adobe? Love your channel, hope it takes off like a rocket and you have no time to read comments 🙂 Thanks for releasing that rodent critter to a better home. How are mom and kittens?

  5. My inlaws live on the side of a mountain in Japan, and they always get bamboo shoots. Their bamboo is super tall, thick, and green. You could build a house with that stuff for sure! They use some super long bamboo as a laundry hanger in their log house. Basically a bamboo forest in some parts. I even see different types of bamboo here in central Texas.

  6. Just talked to Matt over there at Bamboo Ranch and I’m excited that I am going to budget to get some for my place. I need SHAAAAAADE!!!!! And mulch. And fencing. And all the things you can do with this wonderful plant. THANKS!!! I think this may be the first local business I’ve been able to learn about on youtube AND shop from. Awesome.

Also, howdy neighbor! Will think of you all the next time my kid wants to head down to tombstone

  7. ya'll need a fat earth berm / terrace out there – that will capture water and break wind and keep moisture in the area, decreasing erosion. Encourage humidity through element capture and shade and create a microclimate. you can do it! God bless your project I believe in you. Lovely idea using the bamboo. Thats gonna work.
