Why Resident Evil Was Never Defeated By Silent Hill Or Any Other Game

If there’s one survival horror franchise that any gamer is familiar with, no matter their generation, it has to be Resident Evil. The Resident Evil franchise has been around for decades and includes dozens of installments that shaped our gaming journey in the genre. With more than 20 years of history, Resident Evil is one of the most iconic horror franchises and definitely the most successful ever when it comes to the commercial side. Despite the appearance of multiple competitors over the years, Resident Evil remained the absolute champion, and developers started to give up one by one. So the real question is: how has Resident Evil managed to maintain this success for so long? And why are developers not trying to compete with it anymore?

  1. As much as i hate to admit it. It's because there is something for everyone in Resident evil. Fanbase is also much more tolerant and loyal compared to any other game.

  2. Agree with everything said in this video. Simply spot on man. My first Resident Evil game was Code Veronica on the Dreamcast and I had no idea about the numbered mainline games till later. But when I finally played them in the order that my friend let me borrow them, man it really was amazing. I will never forget the damn zombie dogs jumping out of the windows all of a sudden and 9yr old me dropping the controller and yelling. Seeing how the games have progressed from then to now just makes me happy to be a fan of this franchise.

  3. I always preferred the silent Hill games but i completely understand why Resident Evil is more popular. My 2 most recent platinum trophies were for Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 3 Remake. Best games i played this year

  4. Don't I get what other companies don't want to compete with the resident evil is due to the fact that they just want to cash grab by recreating the same formula that's so simple instead of complicated cuz if you think about it resident evil is one of the most complicated survival horror games due to the fact that it plays a certain way but puzzles and survival and that's what makes it so genius and so scary and even though sadly silent Hill used to be the exact same way even it's developers and producers have just failed that gaming franchise in general

  5. For me, the best game I was able to play when I was a teenager was the game F.E.A.R. Good story, good atmosphere, good gameplay and good antagonist. For me, F.E.A.R. far exceeded Resident Evil at the time.

Well now, because of the other opuses that have come out of fear, the license itself has dropped drastically and that's a shame.

But the thing about R.E. is that I feel like he's been underestimated. The B movie aspect bothers me. I think Silent Hill also surpasses it in terms of psychological horror, where R.E. plays more in the grotesque.

  6. Resident Evil's lasting power and relevance has a lot to do with it's brand of campy horror and solid gameplay mechanics. Combine that with campy stories with surprisingly deep lore and good looking, disturbing, appealing or memorable characters (both protagonists & antagonists). Also helps majority of the games in the series are just simply fun and well made, regardless of whatever style and atmosphere they were presenting.

  8. Don't do that
Resident evil high jacked silent hill's whole style and I'm not the only one that thinks silent Hill is a way better franchise
I'll never be a die hard resident evil fan fr

  9. To be fair, it has its own ups and downs, but what makes it more successful is its lore being more straight forward, like virus turning people into monsters/zombies, the threat is happening for real, unlike Silent Hill being psychological, is it taking place in real world or other dimension or dream? And apparently there’s cult performing ritual for the world of silent hill to manifest, It’s lore really got inconsistent throughout its installments then it got into another creative team, to make matters worse.

  10. Comparing resident evil to silent hill isn’t exactly the most accurate, while they both are horror genre resident evil takes a more survival horror approach whilst SH takes a more psychological horror approach, both games excel on their own lanes

  11. Capcom need to release a remaster of the original ps1 version of the first 3 games for modern platforms, re 2 and 3 orignal are way better than the remakes while re 1 remake is a masterpiece

From what i see and played resident evil is amazing story driving amazing character even in most haptic boss fight it's amazing for silent hill however is more depressing then normal always need to enter doors and may even get lost and pray to god to find the right path and the combat is horrible

  13. 4:02 "…Resident Evil 2 in 1998 and Resident Evil 3 in 1999, both expanding the lore and introducing new characters like Leon S. Kennedy and Jill Valentine." I want you to stop and think about that statement, specifically the very end. lol

  14. What Resident Evil does better than the other horror franchises:
    – has more fun gameplay
    – has extra game modes like Mercenaries and/or extra campaigns
    – has cool unlockables
    – has more replay value

Resident Evil is not really that scary compared to Silent Hill or others, but the things that I mentioned above make for a better gaming experience in general. People don't necessarily buy it for the scary aspect.

  15. Silent Hill's story and atmosphere is better than Resident Evil's. (at least when comparing the first 4 games in each series) Both have insanely good soundtracks (I'd say its a tie between the 2) But…and this is a big BUT….Resident Evil has always had better gameplay. Gameplay is and always will be the most important thing.

  16. Unfortunately, not even Resident Evil can beat Fortnite, Call of Duty or Grand Theft Auto 5 for play time and player retention. Those games were the most played games during 2023. Which could explain where Capcom is going to take the RE IP to next. Just for reference, Resident Evil became this with Resident Evil 4 2005 and then again with Resident Evil Village.

  17. I’ve been playing the resident evil series since I was 6 years old starting with 0. I’ve beaten every single one. With that being said no survival horror series comes close to the first 3 silent hill games

  18. I think the most important reason why Resident Evil games are success is actually due to Capcom's very good depiction of Masculinity and Femininity… Both of these are very important in Japanese art and games. Dragon's Dogma 2 just came out and already sold millions. Have big fanbases litteraly in matter of weeks. Time and time again, their games show very detailed body models and tat has attracted alot of players, as expected… In Resident Evil Village theres this very memorable scene of Heisenberg, Lady Dmitrescu, Mother Miranda and some others. I'm sure you know which one is it… The one with "Hahah he's awake!"… We can clearly see, Miranda, Lady D and Angie the doll are female very feminine… Contrast with Heisenberg and Ethan very masculine… As an Asian I'm very attracted by that… Translate into sales… Tat same game aslo we play as Ethan, very masculine and brave, need to find Rose… And the dlc, we play as Rose, give off very child feminine point of view… And big Rose, she's cute yeah!! And you closely look at big Rose's face, she's really looks like her mother, could be a real mother and daughter face scan, tat Rose and Mia… Put a pict of Rose and Mia side by side show to anybody even non gamer 50 year olds, well they will surely say hey tats real quality art… Resident Evil games especially Village are good examples of "No woke" we will support you, all the way Capcom! Gonna buy Dragon's Dogma 2 soon bro, waiting for cash to come in… Singapore here its 94 sg dollars plus its tough high…

  19. BC RE was always Alien 2, while SH is Jacob's ladder, that means, RE could be the same all the time, while Jacob's ladder can', since the town displayed the fears of the protagonist, or other characters. Not the same kind of horror on basics. SH is a more complex one.
