Thoma is one of Genshin’s most tragic characters. Despite having an interesting and well functioning playstyle, it didn’t cater very well to the general format that Pyro espouses and suffered from underwhelming numbers. Thoma is just the absolute worst character in Genshin
-bland design
-terrible stats
-useless in any team because of how his elemental skills work
-boring “backstory”
bro is literally a housemaid, its like something reserved for a boring, replaceable and bland npc like the dumbass princess from the Sumeru quest

After experimenting with a few party combo for CYNO, I have to say that THOMA is one of the best character to pair him with. Thoma provides defense and offense (constant pyro app at minimum) also one of few burst buff that can keep up with CYNO 100% burst up-time (potentially). Really happy to have C6 Thoma!
I use him all the time. He's on my Hu Tao team. Hu Tao + Thoma + Kazuha + Xingqiu my fastest killing team
I have Thoma at c6 from the first banner , didn't build him until dendro reactions.
Is not hard to build at all full GD set with HP main stats and as sub stats ER, EM , Hp and he is doing his job well.
I Enjoy play him whit Ayato, kuki and nahida

Honestly Thoma is only good for dendro comps for now but I guess there’s more better burning or burgeon people
my way of reworking him is to make him a pure pyro amplifier, I've also made some changes to his kit and cons
1. make his ascension to HP%, and decreases his attack for more raw HP
2. for his skill, I would get rid of his shield for more damage, (something like candace) and his damage will scale off his max HP
3. for his burst, he will make an area whenever the enemies are in it, they will be affected by pyro for every 0.5 seconds, the cooldown will get shorter when levelling (just like nilou, but his area is 5x bigger)
4. 1st passive: for every 500 points of his max HP, his ER will be increased by 1% respectively. with a maximum of 100%
2nd passive: for every 1000 points of his max HP, all party members will deal dmg bonus to the enemies affected by pyro by 1% respectively. with a max of 50%
5.c1: casting his burst will increase all party member's resistance to interruption
c2: his skill and burst aoe will be increased by 1.5x
c4: his hold skill damage will have the same cd as his tap damage
c6: removes all ICDs that is related to pyro( for example, if xingqiu is dealing dmg to enemies, all of his attacks with deal vape dmg)
He is my only C6 and yet i still need to pull another character like zhongli for shield and Bennett for support or xiangling for sub-dps. Thoma is fckn frustrating
Came here because I just got him, was hoping for a Kaeya constellation but nooo MiHoYo wanted me to have male Xianling but useless, took me seconds to see he's bad after reading his abilities and thought I might've missed something, and his passive isn't even worth it in the long run, I might have him in the team while fishing for The Catch and that's it. I'd even take Noelle or Xinyan over him if I want shield
As my 2 favorite characters in the game, I currently run a "reverse vape" team with Thoma and Yelan and honestly, I'm having a lot of fun with it. It's far from built, but I like exploring their synergy.
Sad, im also thomas followers, hahaha, thoma is best in burgeon, vaporized and melt as an f2p idolize those 4star characters… Dont care about 5star character banner.. i just focus at 5star weapon banner…. For me, if i want thoma to become dps i just partner him to chongyu to create melt… Kuki suport or lisa dps for vaporize, and burgeon with the traveler… 4 now i just make him dps with my team chongyu,kuki and traveler.. Or lisa thoma, kuki and traveler or lisa, thoma, traveler and candace… So good luck 4 me…. And also his one of the best partner in crime of haezou, with my xingque and beidu, for my anemo swirl reaction team….

I feel like there's a lot about Thoma that people don't actually think about when they talk about him. Warning, I am a Thoma main and I tend to over-talk about him so this might be long lol
OKAY so. Biggest one I think people miss is his C6. His kit is pretty meh in terms of what he can do before C6, but after that he can work in tandem with Benny to provide a good amount of atk boost, so long as you use NAs. Basically, each time his shield stacks, the active character gains a 15% atk bonus for 6s. With Thoma's burst, my Childe goes from 2,056 atk to 2,364 with one stack, and theoretically this could be boosted for another 15% before the first one times out for 2,718? Now maybe that's not ideal for replacing Xiangling in International but it's still nice.
Now while that might not be useful, consider our favourite short king Xiao. Hopefully it's known that you can N1 cancel (N0.5) for a bit more damage between plunges. Fun fact though, the timing of Xiao's plunges means the icd on Thoma's burst is over, and N1 cancelling triggers Thoma's burst, meaning now Xiao does e v e n m o r e d a m a g e.
And it's not like advising the use of a 4 star's C6 to make them useful is unheard of. Sara, Sucrose, and so on. Since 4 stars are a lot easier to C6, I don't see why it'd be unreasonable to say that.
Furthermore, people look at Thoma's kit and think they're supposed to build him both as a subDPS and a shielder. NO, doing this means none of his kit does well. Pick one and he can do well. Shieldbot Thoma won't do damage, but he'll do a decent job of protecting your team (note that no, he doesn't do this better than other shielders, so really only do this if you need a second pyro and don't have tankfei or you just want him on your team, which is understandable I mean look at him). SubDPS Thoma won't shield your team super well since you'll likely be focusing on pyro dmg/atk more than hp, but at least he actually DOES something other than look cute which, to be fair, is his greatest skill.
This is why I despise trial Thoma, which is where a lot of people will come to assume he's downright useless. Their Thoma is built for support, and kind of damage, but he's actual trash there and I hate it. Give the man bolide or millileth or crimson, ANYTHING else ffs bc aAUGH- (not to mention what they did to Childe. Seriously, just Kaeya? Excuse?)
And yes, burgeon Thoma is actually really good. Pretty boy cause explosions!
Orrrrr you could just take the uh, somewhat inadvisable route I did and make him a physical DPS because apparently I hate damage! Actually though, mine can do more than you think, and some of his artifacts are even still copium 🙂
And he has 600 more atk than Childe? I use pyro resonance usually but still, wtf have I done-

Short answer: other characters can fill his rolls but better.
He was the first character I pulled. And then I found that he is basically unplayable because to ascend him I need to get to Inazuma. And then I found out how LONG will it take to get to Inazuma (My mains hit 80 by that time). And THEN I found that the stinkin' shrooms he probably gets high on to ascend are locked behind two long and timegated with server restarts quest chains on the island that is at the most distant part of the map and locked by stupid fog mechanic. Obviously by that time I did not give rat's ass about Thoma, because come on…
Srsly, did the person who designed him got high on the same shrooms probably?
I have mained thoma since ar19 and he's my best built character. I had used xiangling before getting him and in my team, she didn't help as much as everyone said she would. I think thoma is underrated and most peopel see him as a support. However, if you build him right, he can be a main dps. I chose to main him because of his personality and because he was a good character in the lore, but soon he found a place on my team that can never be replaced.
It's interesting you mention Thoma's viability if he was another element, and honestly that makes sense. I haven't done his hangout yet, but I've wondered what gave him ambition or anything to stand out to the pyro archon to get a pyro vision compared to cryo, maybe even hydro because he's loyal and defensive of the Kamisatos. He doesn't seem like he'd fit dendro from his background, so maybe that's why he's pyro: to have decent reactions with the Kamisato siblings.
I've used Thoma A LOT in my Hu Tao team
I needed something that shielded, applied pyro for swirl and well, his C6 is great for Hu Tao
nowadays Thoma is much better with Nahida Burgeon teams if you don't wanna use Benny boy for Burgeon. since his Pyro app is slower than Xiangling's. however he might fall off once Dehya arrives. idk if it will be true or not but leaks say she'll be a Burgeon Support Dps.
