Why has an oil tanker been sitting for eight years in the Red Sea? – BBC News

In the waters of the Red Sea, a huge oil tanker has been sitting idle since the outbreak of the civil war in Yemen eight years ago.

Owned by Yemen’s national energy company, the slowly decaying boat became another casualty in a war that has pushed the country into humanitarian crisis.

But its cargo, a vast load of crude oil, set it up to be potentially the worst oil-related disaster in history – that is until a UN operation in August finally managed to transfer oil off the boat.

  1. So this oil tanker had over 1 million barrels of crude oil in it. At todays prices that's worth $87+ million. Why did they need to raise $144 million to empty it? Could they not of used the value of the crude oil to pay for most of it or gotten an oil company to empty it for free and as payment they get to keep the oil. Crude oil doesn't degrade over time like refined products. The tanker has scrap metal value too. It seems absurd that school children where raising money toward this clean up.

  2. There is a sunken oil tanker Franken in the Bay of Gdańsk in Baltic Sea. It has been lying there since April 1945 and no one knows how much fuel does it have in tanks. Makes me wonder who's going to clean this mess.

  3. 🥺🥹. Grateful for outcome & frankly: ANY good 🌏 /good human/good news story! The crew, patch divers & ALL who pushed to avoid catastrophe have earned much recognition!! Big oil companies could scrape up a LOUD thank you, rewards & career opportunities – not to mention share salvage cost?! They're pretty short on good press, while ever high on profits..

Why doesn't UN/an international body organize a fund for such?? Not a 1st, not a last. Whether at licensing, tax or whatever time: a fee, per barrel & disallow passing onto customers. Like paying a due. A 'cost of doing business' fee?! 🇺🇸 plumbers/builders/real estate ppl (off the top of my head, in many states): req'd to pay into funds to pay damages when things go bad.. Big oil is in a far more danger & profit prone industry!! A fund, paid solely by them, to be able to do this work would help every1 (incld them) & serve as a token reminder of responsibility that comes w/the work & the 💵!!

Despite MUCH (maybe too much) news consumption: 1st I've heard of this. I do wish drama/ratings/entertainment weren't the way of the 'news' industry recent years.. Thanks for still reporting things that matter.

  4. In the real world, Asian scrapyards bid at auction to BUY old tankers for their value in recyclable metals….In the UN fantasy bubble, they need a further $20 million in funding to dispose of the ship……🤣💰💰💰🙄
There is no organisation with higher overheads & an ability to waste money like the United Nations…

  5. Why has the BBC remembered this story after 8 years? As an average person, I have heard at least 100 times about this tanker from the Middle Eastern news channels. In particular, the Saudi and Yemeni (ousted) governments, were extremely worried about the possibility of an oil leak. This tanker was a guarantee for Houthis, who overthrow the democratically elected Yemeni government. Any final blow to their griep on power, would have been met with exploding the tanker and causing irreversible damage to the Saudi military coalition. They stayed in power, got the guarantees to stay in the future, and the tanker was no longer needed.

  6. Anyone noticed that usually it's the western countries and their citizens who often help others?

When their are problems in the middle east and Africa, not much help come from their own neighbors….

  7. There should be a global tax on oil to pay for all cleanup and prevention of oil and fuel spills globally. It's time oil companies pay for the costs, they get the rewards so it's only fair they pay all costs.

  8. (Daniel 9:27 was fulfilled in August 13 2023 also when the woman began travailing in birth in order to fulfill the time of the gentiles for the mystery of Revelation 12 to be completed, Daniel 12:1 next, three riders were released within 2020 and 2023. These words are true and worthy, he who has ears to hear let him hear.)

Gospel of Matthew, chapter 24, verse 3.

“And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them. But when ye shall hear of wars and commotions, be not terrified: for these things must first come to pass; but the end is not by and by. Then said he unto them, Nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and great earthquakes shall be in divers places, and famines, and pestilences; and fearful sights and great signs shall there be from heaven.”

“And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.”

Gospel of Luke, chapter 21, verse 25 to 28.

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. “For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.”

First Thessalonians chapter 5, verse 3.

“For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.”

  9. It's funny how pained the journalist was to just say, yes, this is a good news story. So at odds with his profession, in fact, that he had to drag is a collection of terrible things…maybe so he could sleep at night 😂

  10. Help Ukraine and Taiwan! Russia and CCP are so evil that we must overthrow them to save the world!

Sorry to all the people around the world, we didn't success to stop the CCP using the new corona virus harming the world, although we, all the Fa Lun Gong practitioners, did our best, the reality is still depressing. But I believe the CCP would be demised, the wealth of all the corrupt CCP officers should be taken to compensate for all the other countries!

  11. "Well from the report, the reason the ship is stuck there is because politicians cannot agree amongst themselves and would rather cause a huge pollution problem to the world, than do their job. We have the same problem here with Russia and NATO. Nothing changes." I couldn't agree more! What a game.
