  1. I disagree that the Victorian fire screen was to shield occupants of a room from heat, since the purpose of a fireplace is to radiate heat into a room. More likely, it was to conceal the unsightliness of an empty fireplace while not in use.

  2. In the 1960's I knew a guy in Santa Monica Ca who made a good living making tables and benches out of old wooden Hatch Covers salvaged from shipwrecks.
    Made some spectacular ones w/shell and artifact inlays and inclusions…….

  4. Could the item with the tiny tongs possibly be a server for saccharine during sugar shortages during the world wars? I can't imagine it being too much earlier due to the plastic insert, and the saccharine tablets are quite tiny enough to require the tongs.
