What is Max Verstappen's greatest quality? | The Race F1 Podcast

Max Verstappen has another Formula 1 record to his name, with his Italian Grand Prix triumph marking his 10th victory in a row.
It was a fitting way for the record to be broken, too, with Verstappen made to work harder for it than his most recent victories, and The Race F1 Podcast celebrates a landmark moment that in the context’s of Red Bull’s dominant 2023 F1 campaign could easily be overlooked, but in years to come will surely be looked back on as an incredible achievement.
And while there’s a brief look at how he did it, on what was the most impressive weekend of the season from Ferrari – on home territory, too – the focus of the race analysis is on how it was able to give Red Bull something to think about, early race leader and eventual podium finisher Carlos Sainz’s excellence all weekend, and what credit Ferrari deserves for letting its drivers fight freely.
There’s examination of a ‘better kind of second’ from Sergio Perez, a solid weekend for Mercedes – despite both drivers getting five-second penalties – and another example of what’s fast becoming a ‘classic’ points-scoring effort from Alex Albon and Williams.
As ever, there’s also time for plenty of questions from The Race Members’ Club.

  1. The cost cap makes F1 what it is now with Redbull's dominance. Teams cant trow money anymore to develope their cars trough the season.
Its the same when Mercedes had there dominace with the engines.
Teams used tokens for little updates. Cost cap has a big impact.

  2. While really exciting how it turned out both Ferraris defending so aggressively, would’ve been much better for them to start 2nd and 3rd. Or just allow max through right away. Could have then worked together and not burned through their tyres making a double podium possible.

  3. Max's greatest quality? I think his versatility, adaptability, consitency, and mental strength.. He is extremely good at everything and has no more weaknesses (he used to be a bit to impatient sometimes when younger), and he delivers every race weekend.. Nothing seems to faze him.. I wouldn't be surprised if he wins every remaining race this season.. His karting stats were also already insane, same level of dominance..

  4. I think Max's biggest quality is that he chases perfection you can do that whether or not you have the ideal car. He doesn't often have a lot to say but when you hear him its not just about getting the win is about getting the win in the most efficient way possible with great execution from the team. I think someone like Charles and Lewis are more inclined to chase the results and if a level of perfection comes with that so be it. It's not the same rage that boils over in Max when their teams make a mistake. There's no such thing as trying with Max there's do or don't. And that reflects in the attitude of the teams

  5. Anyone else feel like the minimum time penalty should be brought down to 1 second, with 1/2/3/4 being options?

Not saying ditch 5 and 10 second penalties, but sometimes 5 seconds seems a bit rough at times.
Then again maybe not since there is a difference between race pace & track position/getting past a driver that the attack driver is faster than…

  6. The 5 and 10sec penalties are not enough of a deterrent to some teams, hence we should return to the old Stop and Go Pit penalties. I can guarantee if a driver knew they had to pit for 5 sec and not be allowed a tyre change during the penalty, there would be far less frequency of the advantages that (Mercedes in particular) teams are taking to gain track position with infringements.

  7. For me, he has too many great abilities to decide on which one would be the best. Hes just insanely elite at many different aspects from anything to driving style, mental strength, confidence, consistency, dedication, etc.

  8. man is the GOAT. Literally, i dont care how many titles michael or hammie have. i have seen this dude doing things i have never seen anyone else doing, overtakes, saves you name it. Guy even had the regulations changed because of him. He is literally on a league on his own, and michael/hammie or senna wont stand a chance against this version of him

  10. Greatest strengths:

    1. Passion for racing – no one, absolutely no one loves racing as much as max does. Whatever format, SIM or track he just loves it.

    2. Mental strength and ruthlessness: Mercedes and Brit journalists can say whatever they want about him, he does not give a damn. He has a certain ruthless streak and is determined to absolutely demolish his opponents on track.

Absolute race pace : self explanatory

  11. You can heap praise on Carlos but to be honest and if we read the race correctly, Max was racing Carlos for the three opening laps and decided to relax a bit, just keep the pressure up and wait. He knew the tires would drop off and he knew the little mistake would present itself and when it did Max did not hesitate. In the blink of an eye Carlos was grabbed, eaten and left behind and nothing in all his magnificence he could do about it.
