Using Bluetooth Technology to deter trespassers – Herdio

Today we install Herdio indoor/outdoor bluetooth speaker system to deter the frequent break-ins by kids. We pair it with the drop in function of Amazon Echo and a bluetooth connection to allow communication with anyone in the building that shouldnโ€™t be there. Innovative solution to enable speaking over speakers remotely. We also come up with a funny plan in case we have any more intruders.

This channel is dedicated to my journey trying to save a historic manufacturing building. The Brown Shoe Co. Building in Charleston Illinois.

  1. Great idea! I would mount the speakers to the ceiling between the joist ,you will hardly see them there. I would put a serious message on it not the joke one you played.

  2. Chris, if this doesn't work like you really wanted, the Ring securioty cameras do exactly this already. No muss, no fuss. You can configure your alerts and talk through the cameras while looking through them real time.

  3. You could hook up an analogue wall mounted phone, one of the old school ones with an actually mechanical ringer on the wall, then when anyone comes in the building you could call it and scare them.

  4. Interesting solution! I wonder if your recording will make sense to the yutes in the area. That longer message might keep them listening longer which could be helpful for the police to catch them.
BTW, an impact driver and good screws should go into those beams / joists / stringers. also, if you were using the hardware that came with the speakers, the screws are often lower quality. And if the screws are JIS compliant, the driver bits are slightly different.
If your cable modem has ethernet ports, you don't need to pay them. Get a router, plug it in to port #1 (most likely but it might be different depending on modem) and set up your own secure wireless network. In such a large building, look for a router that has extenders. Also, disable guest access to deter people loitering outside to use your wifi.
If your internet company is like xfinity, which defaults to broadcasting "free xfinity wifi for customers", you might be able to turn that off as well.

  5. you should get all the bells and whistles – Have tons of lights and sirens – make go like a prison break is happening! that would do it! but all of the alarms and lights should be closer to the outside. just imagine what they would do then! run and start going to church every day… ok maybe that will not happen but, you never know! well – after seeing the cideo .. you have my Idea I think! you could also make some wanted posters like you would see in the movies and place them around town! especially if you can get a close up and clean picture of one or many!

  7. Some of the Reolink cameras can do 2 way audio and they have WIFI (Argus 2e, Argus ECO) you could do POE power over ethernet, but then you need the wiring, and POE switch also. Using white wire it would be hardly noticed on that Ceiling. We use the Reolink Iphone app(no subscription) to see the camera's from the outside/home. Great Video's keep them coming!

  8. As for the 4 leg pests. If you have crawl space tunnels for plumbing. Put a strobe light down there. You wont have anymore anything down there. These critters like the dark. The flashing light is too much for them. Obviously you wouldnt put it on any building level with windows.
Ring doorbell and accesories all wireless for the 2 leg critters.
