Unbroken is a biographical war drama film directed by Angelina Jolie and released in 2014. The movie tells the story of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic athlete and World War II veteran who survived a plane crash, endured a grueling 47-day journey at sea, and then spent more than two years as a prisoner of war in Japan. The film is based on the non-fiction book Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand.

The movie opens with Louis Zamperini (played by Jack O’Connell) as a young boy growing up in Torrance, California. He gets into trouble frequently, but his older brother, Pete (played by Alex Russell), recognizes his potential as a runner and encourages him to pursue athletics. Louis becomes a track star in high school and sets a record that earns him a spot on the United States Olympic team. He competes in the 1936 Berlin Olympics and meets Adolf Hitler, who shakes his hand.

During World War II, Louis enlists in the United States Army Air Forces and becomes a bombardier. On a mission over the Pacific, his plane crashes into the ocean, leaving him and two other crew members stranded on a life raft. They endure hunger, thirst, and shark attacks for 47 days before being captured by the Japanese Navy. Louis is taken to a prison camp where he is subjected to brutal treatment by the sadistic camp commander, Mutsuhiro Watanabe, also known as “The Bird” (played by Miyavi). The Bird takes a particular interest in tormenting Louis, as he sees him as a symbol of American defiance.

Despite the physical and emotional torture he endures, Louis never gives up hope of being rescued. He and his fellow prisoners are eventually liberated at the end of the war, but Louis returns home with deep emotional scars that haunt him for years to come.

One of the most powerful scenes in the movie occurs when Louis is forced to hold a large wooden beam over his head for an extended period while being beaten by The Bird. The scene is a testament to the incredible physical and mental strength that Louis possesses, as he endures unimaginable pain and refuses to give up. It is a pivotal moment in the film, as Louis realizes that he can withstand anything that his captors throw at him.

Overall, Unbroken is a moving and inspiring film that highlights the resilience and strength of the human spirit. The movie is a testament to the incredible bravery of Louis Zamperini and the thousands of other prisoners of war who suffered at the hands of the Japanese during World War II.
