  1. Tbh you will probably hear a change in this guys voice with every album cycle. It is an extremely difficult vocal style to maintain over the years. Plant himself had blown his voice out by the time Zeppelin where five albums deep and was never the same.

  2. The mix of this album just feels off on most songs. It makes it hard to understand Josh because Jake’s guitar is too loud. I also felt like Danny’s drum intro on Sacred the Thread and even the whole song was turned down too low volume wise. It needs to have a more full sound. I also felt like Indigo Streak sounded better officially live but is still one of my favorites on the album.

  3. Not as good as TBAGG, but I still really enjoy it. I thought out of the non singles, Fate of the Faithful, The Indigo Streak, Frozen Light, and The Archer were all bangers.

  4. I agree with you on just about every one of your sentiments here…as a huge fan…and after seeing them live this year.

I saw them in Memphis at the very end of their DIG tour, and overall, even though I loved it and was so emotional and crying. I felt like they were tired…and I felt like Josh was tired. I hope they have a new passion and excitement going out on the SC tour.

Wondering if any of this is due to the pneumonia that he had in 2022. Sam has said that Josh almost lost a lung during that illness.

My favorite tracks on this album are definitely “Meeting the Master”, the song just changed my life entirely; “Farewell for Now” I just think it’s a beautiful song; “Waited All Your Life” love it; and I like “Frozen Light” and “The Archer”.

I think when Josh was younger, he could almost get away more with the screaming. Sometimes now it sounds like he’s being throttled a little bit and it is kind of off putting. Still, I feel like he’s one of the most incredible vocalists in this new rock generation.

And I do think this album has a lot of songs that just sound the same. And you’re right I miss some of the polish on TBAGG (😂) and some of the more rollicking kind of rock songs in GVF past like “Mountain of the Sun”, “My Way Soon”, etc.

Like you though I am so thankful to have a new album to jam to, and I just hope Josh isn’t just hanging on waiting to get to the other shore, which is his working in film dream.

  5. This was a very thoughtful and fair critique!

I will say this album feels a bit hollow because of the length, I would have loved hearing 1-2 more songs and a stretched out version of Runaway Blues. Seems like the songs end right as you’re settling in, whereas Gardens Gate might have dragged on a bit longer than you’d like (late inclusions of Caravel and Barbarians might be the cause).

I will say Falling Sky has grown on me since release, which I’m sure many of the other songs will as well. The chorus drops in Waited All Your Life right before the vocals get me every time, what a fantastic song.

  6. You read my mind in your review, I’m the biggest greta fan. I actually feel this album is a zeppelin replica more than any other album. It’s almost like they tried to make it a little messy, which I can’t decide if I love or not hahaha either way new greta is always appreciated

  7. I agreed with a lot of your points, a big plus for me as compared to TBAGG is the bass, it's much more present in the mix and really adds to the songs. Obviously since TBAGG had huge walls of strings and was more bombastic in a lot of ways, its unsurprising that the bass would get lost, but Sam kills it on the low end and deserves to be heard clear. That being said, the production does got weird on Starcatcher in a few places, I definitely hope GVF keeps trying out other producers and doesn't stick to Dave Cobb. All in all, I loved this album, but I've gotta say TBAGG just has better songs/arguably better production overall.
