The case of the murdered monarchies continues! Russia is far and away the most famous monarchy to crumble to dust, and boy did it ever. When Nicholas II became Tsar, he told his brother-in-law, and I quote “I am not yet ready to be Tsar. I never wanted to become one. I know nothing about the business of ruling”. He then spent the next 23 years fighting tooth and nail to hold onto absolute power. Imagine his shock when everything went belly up

  1. Pro tip for history lovers on Instagram; Never touch an post featuring the Russian imperial family on your explore page, otherwise you’ll be flooded with posts about these ghastly people, who were disasters for everyone around them, the empire and indeed world since the revolution led to communism. I’d say they were incredibly lucky to have been brutally murdered, it obscured just how terrible and stupid they were. (This pro tip applies to posts about Princess Diana too.)

  2. I recently listened to a podcast that detailed some of the failed efforts made to get the Czar and his family into exile and safety in England, and it's heartbreaking to think of. So many European royals were related at that point, and they were a close family. Many years earlier, Queen Victoria had opposed the match between her favourite granddaughter and Nicholas specifically because Russia was a dangerous and poorly run country. But once worse came to worse, Queen Victoria was long dead, it was considered politically untenable in England to offer them sanctuary, and the Romanovs were left to their fate.

  3. Well, the voyage of the damned that led to the battle of Tsushima has not one, but two videos from Drachinifel. I highly recommend you watch them, before those pesky desert going torpedo boats show up next to the Kamchatka

  4. I blame the Empress for the downfall. She insisted on keeping Rasputin around, despite it being incredibly unpopular. She undermined the family's image by keeping a lot of Germans around. Then, when Nicholas finally saw that they needed to abdicate and flee, she refused to leave. Had she been more reasonable, they might have at least survived.

  5. Alright so I just kinda want to say he was not that bad. This video paints him out to be like the worst ruler imaginable but a lot of things in the video were either lacking very crucial context or just flat out wrong. I know he wasn’t the perfect ruler but he wasn’t some incompetent idiot who saw the Russian people as inferior either.
