The DUMBEST REFEREE in NFL HISTORY

Prior to a 1995 week 13 NFL game between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Green Bay Packers, linesman Jerry Bergman, a 30-year veteran, did something highly controversial that was not allowed per NFL rules, and that compromised the integrity of the game. And to say that he paid the price for it would be an understatement, because his entire legacy was destroyed after he did one of the dumbest things a referee could possibly do. This is the story behind the 1995 Packers/Buccaneers game, and the referee that lost his job because of his stupidity

  1. My dad and I were at this game and it was the first time we had ever been inside Lambeau Field. You can imagine we were like kids in a candy store. Both of us had been to Packers games in Milwaukee County Stadium (vs the Eagles in 1992), Camp Randall Stadium (preseason game vs the Bills in 1991), and Soldier Field (the Halloween quagmire vs the Bears in 1994). I had no idea about this referee.

  2. Who gives a shit!! That coach and his team got their asses beat and were salty about it. The NFL have a lot more shady shit then this happened before and since especially since that asshat Goodell took over!!

  3. I'm surprised 😯😯😯😯😯 Brett Favre didn't get in trouble like Pete Rose. Ref: Brett, could I have at least five autographs. Brett Favre: Yes, I'll give you your five autographs. Hook me up with some favorable calls on the field. Ref: You got it.

  4. Maybe you eject Chmura if he also throws a punch. Otherwise, what occurred was more or less standard, in terms of ejections. Both teams should've had 15 yard penalties.

  5. How about you step up to the game?… its all too easy to be a arm chair umpire but until you actually stand up in the line of fire… you will never know what its like. you walk the talk son but you don't walk it… therefore your spell is bullshit.

  6. For what it is worth on these YouTube videos sponsored by ads:
On the Democratic ads there is no option to “skip ad.”
On the Republican ads I am given the option to “skip ad” after 5 seconds.
    Interesting right?.

  7. Really kind of sad that Bergman's career ended over this. The thing is he could have gotten those autographs in an indirect way, through an emissary. Then he could have said discreet thank yous to the players involved. He would have Christmas gifts for his grandson and there would not even be a semblance of impropriety. But when he entered the lockerrooms and made direct contact with the players, he set himself up for the "perfect storm" that ended his career.

  8. Wow, I never knew about this. Although it's all speculatory, after the fact it does look very incriminating. And even if he wasn't fired he could have been forced to resign. And I'm sure it was rather embarrassing to him and if it wasn't it should have been. And the referee could have gotten his autographs after the game and that would have been a better option for him and this all could have been avoided that way.

  9. When he said the ref went into the Packers locker room to ask for autographs, I thought to myself, oh that's bad, but it wouldn't be so bad if he asked for autographs from both teams, at least that would show a non-bias even if it was sketchy. Then bingo!, he says he also went to the other locker room and asked for autographs there too. Sketchy, yes. Against the rules, yes. Slight bias activated, probably.

By his own admission though, the game was pretty much a blowout, and the outcome unlikely to be effected. In the long run, probably a nothingburger. Just a shame that an otherwise remarkable lifestory was more or less ruined by this one incident. Now, if one could produce stories of him having gone into locker rooms previously, constantly asking for signatures, that might make for a more controversial story. As it is, just a grandpa tryin to grandpa.

The Henderson ejection is the only thing pointed to in this video as evidence of any kind of foul play. Had there been multiple egregious or questionable calls, this would be a bigger deal. I was an NFL fan from the mid 70's, knee high to a grasshopper, watching the Redskins. Gradually lost interest due to kneeling, wokeness, weak rule changes, and Redskins name change, not once, but twice. I remember MANY times when fans were convinced their team got slighted, blacklisted, screwed, etc. I was one of them at times. Truth is, sometimes your team just falls short.

This reminds me of the Pete Rose controversy, in which retired player-turned-manager Pete Rose was banned from baseball. He never admitted to betting against his own team and in fact insisted that he only bet FOR them, and despite the gambling controversy that besmirched his name and career, was at times allowed to return to various events like all-star games and other baseball events, but is barred from being in the hall of fame.

If a person is so enthusiastic (gambling can be an addiction, I know, enthusiasm may not be required, but still, no gambler bets to LOSE) for their own side they are willing to bet on it, I see that as less of a 'sin' than the other problems in baseball, like the giant asterisks that should be next to Mark McGuire and Sammy Sosa homerun records. Everyone knew, or had suspicions.

Last note, speaking of fans feeling like they're being screwed, the most recent example is the Bengals. There was that contentious playoof (I made a typo, then decided to leave it because it seemed appropriate) game between them and the Steelers a few years back, and now this wild bruhaha over whether they get to play out their entire season due to the shocking injury on the field a week ago, and what effect that will have on seeding. An effing coin flip? Seriously Goodell? I feel for Bengals fans. Years ago when Baltimore was seeking a new team after losing the Colts, and kept missing out on expansion, I had a t-shirt that said "To hell with the NFL". I might have to drag it out of my closet or attic.
