In the books, all that we hear about the war in the North is after the Northern Dunedain of the Grey Company arrive in Rohan and meet up with Aragorn & co. Gimli says "Why did we not wish for some of our own countrymen, Legolas?" and Legolas looks north and says "None would come. War already marches on their borders." (Or something to that effect). In the Appendices, we learn that the Easterlings overran the Men of Dale and the dwarves, and that Dain (who was the one to kill Azog the Defiler at the end of the Battle of Azanulbizar) was killed while standing over the body of King Brand. Following that lost battle outside Dale and on the slopes of Erebor, the Easterlings besieged the survivors who had withdrawn to the Mountain, and I think the siege was only broken when the Ring was destroyed and Sauron's will stopped directing the Easterlings to fight.
Elfhelm was the Second Marshal of the Mark, and it was with the men of his command that Eowyn, under her pseudonym of 'Dernhelm', rode with Merry to Minas Tirith.
And it is nice to see Rohan doing well, as you say. They should pose a fun mid-game challenge.
