Rebecca Schaeffer began modeling at the age of 16, going off to New York on her own to begin her career. Four months later, she found herself in Japan, modeling. Eventually, she landed a co-starring role on My Sister Sam (1986), for which she is now best known. In 1989 she also became a spokesperson for Thursday’s Child, a charity for at-risk teens.

In April of that same year, having missed a signing due to filming, she reluctantly went to a girls’ shelter to sign autographs. “No one will recognize me”, she insisted, “or want my autograph,” but as it turned out all of them did. In fact, the girls were so in awe that they invited her to the Renaissance Fair in May; Rebecca accepted.

Only two months later, she lay dead on the pavement in front of her new apartment in West Hollywood, having been shot to death by a paranoid schizophrenic fan around her age, Robert John Bardo, who came to her apartment asking for an autograph. She obliged, even though she was busy rehearsing in her apartment for the most important role of her short career. He later said he felt rejected by her because she didn’t spend more time with him at her door.

He returned a few minutes later, pressed the buzzer, and when she again opened the door for him, he shot her once in the chest, placing the bullet directly into her heart. Rebecca screamed out, “Why?” then fell backward in the doorway, and was pronounced dead at Cedars-Sinai hospital within minutes of arriving there by ambulance after the shooting.

The killer fled to Tucson, AZ, and the next morning the previously diagnosed “psychiatric patient” was found walking blindly, appearing to be hoping to be hit and killed by a car or truck on a major highway. He was subsequently arrested, transferred back to Los Angeles, and plea-bargained for a life sentence without the possibility of parole, with a then-young assistant district attorney named Marcia Clark, who later became famous for her failed attempt to convict O.J. Simpson of murder. There was a trial by Judge that lasted a month, because the obsessed fan changed his mind about the plea bargain agreement, and pleaded an ‘insanity defense’. He was found guilty, and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

She was buried at Ahavai Sholom Cemetery in Portland.

  2. I wasn't familiar with Rebecca Schaefer. I do follow film and television stories but not nearly as much these past 10+ years. Thank you for sharing your hard work with us. This was indeed tragic what happened to her and many rising stars, unfortunately. But there is a saying about these so-called "fans." Anybody who attacks a celebrity is not a fan. Thanks again, Scott ❤

  3. This case hit me at heart, no sense at all to do a crime like this. I visited her grave and paid my respects. Thank for this video, I can only imagine how big a star she could've been. RIP Rebecca

  4. I have a theory why such things happen, particularly in the United States at such a rate and proportion in comparison to other countries. It is just a theory, so I might be wrong. I will leave the gun possession laws aside, focusing on the mental state of people and lifestyles. Celebrities are presented as beautiful, successful, kind, loving, caring. This usually creates a false image and impression of their personality. In Bardo's mind, Rebecca was ideal and perfect. That's why he was so jealous when he saw her in a love scene in a movie she starred in. She had "a chance to remain a pure and virginal girl", but in his mind, this scene tainted her, making her just "another Hollywood whore". This had embittered him and now she had to pay for her sin of taking part in such scenes. The other thing she'll pay for is making herself unavailable, sending him out the door and telling him never to bother her again. So I guess in Bardo’s mind it was something like: “Who do these celebrities think they are?” Not to mention he was holding “The Catcher in the Rye”, so he liked Mark David Chapman’s reason for killing John Lennon. Very similar attitude to celebrities here: “Who do you think you are? Who does John Lennon think he is, when saying that the Beatles are more popular than Jesus Christ? (Lennon mentioned in a 1966 interview that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus). Why are they (the celebrities) superior and we the fans inferior?” Sort of love-hate attitude. “I like your acting, singing, whatever talent you might have but I hate you for this and that … things you said or did.” This is just an excuse, he would have killed her anyway, but they need these excuses to justify their actions.

Now obsessive thoughts like that could happen in everybody’s mind and stalking behavior and actions are seen everywhere in the world, but why is it in the United States that things are so overwhelming? I believe it has to do with social isolation, success and being successful by all means and costs. Media propaganda, education, the entire structure in which the state is organized, functions in a way that success must be sought at all costs. You must be successful, otherwise, you just didn’t make it. What a loser you are if your life is miserable. So many people live under huge amounts of stress – financial, emotional, physical. Again, the United States is a country where individualism is embedded in the very principle of existence. It is your fault if you are unhappy, if you can’t socialize, if you can’t find friends and so on. In many other countries, collectivism is part of the lifestyle – we are together as a team, we act together and if I fail, maybe, you guys have your responsibility. If I am unhappy, maybe you guys contributed to it. My point is that in other countries where success is not the number one priority that is sought at all costs, where people are socialized, where life is not so stressful, their Robert John Bardo probably would not have killed their Rebecca Schaeffer.

  5. Hi Scott thanks again for another wonderful video. I didn't remember the story of Samantha Smith and I looked it up and it's outrageously interesting that alone would make a great video but also Theresa Saldana was not killed. She survived the attack and was responsible for bringing the crime of stalking out into the public eye. She even played herself in a film about the attack… Can you imagine that? Thanks again for giving us another great story and I hope all is well you be safe out there brother see you later!

  6. Great episode! Welcome back to Portland. I saw the Rowdy Piper and I didn’t know he was buried here and a few weeks ago I went and visited it. My wife and I visited Rebecca’s grave a long time ago.
