School staff walk out to protest new Ontario legislation – #podcast

The labour dispute between educational workers, represented by the Canadian Union of Public Employees, and Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservative government has escalated this week. The union issued its strike notice on Sunday and the government responded with back-to-work legislation that included the controversial notwithstanding clause on Monday.

Talks broke down on Thursday afternoon after the mediator decided the two sides were still too far apart. The union has decided to proceed with a protest that the province’s legislation has made illegal. The Globe’s future of work reporter Vanmala Subramaniam explains why many union leaders across the country are keeping a close eye on what happens next.

  3. why does the news app headline say the strike is illegal? isn't that what the legislation is for? why is the globe and mail pushing such an aggressive and factually inaccurate headline?

maybe newspapers and media should uphold their ethical responsibility to present facts without the taint of their increasing and problematic bias.

  4. CUPE wants kids to have the safe, functional classrooms they deserve, which includes paying workers enough to at least make-up the 10% effective pay-cut inflation and past short-sighted cheap-skating by Doug Ford has imposed on them and allowing them to focus on their jobs without needing to use food-banks to feed their families. The treasonous Ontario PCs want to warehouse kids in dysfunctional and dangerous conditions for the profit of their oligarchic masters. Whose side are you on?

    Solidarity!

  5. Do Ontarians on C.P.P. and O.A.S. and ETC. get a inflation rate yearly increase ? Their yearly pay is much , much lower than any profession. Not a chance ! Theses people have worked and paid taxes their whole life time.

  6. Shame on them all after what the kids have been through last 2 years. Rotating strikes going INTO Covid and now here we are with no education for Ontario children. These kids have missed SO much. Nurses are not getting any increase and private sector no way reflects pay raises teaches are asking for. Who else in Canada is getting more than a 2.5% increase??? Unions NEVER happy when a Conservative leader is in charge.

  8. No one remembers the filler in education. Simplify school for real world experience. When was the last time most of us used algebra? Spelling, grammar and punctuation are dead on social media. Generations of people now say, "Where's my keys?" Where are my keys, is correct. If teachings aren't followed, what's the point of teaching?

  9. Good ! The Federal Government has the galls to spend millions of taxpayers' dollars to aid the Nazi Ukrainian regime, but has no money for it's own education system is a sign Canada is now run by clueless Wokiests brainwashing Canadians with it's mainstream media !

  10. Freeze the strikers bank accounts…..they are a waste of space. Education system in Canada is a joke……home school your kids, these teachers just want to push the alphabet community agenda on your kids and put them on puberty blockers.

  11. Ford, you did a good job. Useless teachers in this province that had laptop latte classes in the last 2 years meanwhile corrupted Liberal government shut down businesses and lockdown! Teachers still made money last 2 years where rest of us had to open our piggy bank to pay rent.

  12. Well, so much for our Charter of(Non) Rights.
Collective bargaining is de facto circumvented.( Not withstanding Clause, WTF?)
Ford Government was quick to lock down schools without any scientific data to justify these measures during the Scandemic.
Which, BTW now even his “Holiness” Pope Anthony Fauci admits wasn’t neccessary.
Yahoo Ford , like his bosom buddy, Trudeau, has taken a big slurp of the Koolaid called power.
He’s a big Phony as his refusal to testify at Trudy’s illegal. “ Emergency Act” invocation proves.
Although, I’ll vote for a conservative Party, it sure as hell won’t be for the “ Liberal Light Ford Party”.

  13. I stand with the teachers and their support staff. Trying to take away their right to strike is unprincipled and unethical. The conservatives should stop giving so many breaks to business and increase support to education.

  14. Wake up Ontario. This discriminatory Bill 28 is no different than Bill 124, which imposed a wage cap on health care workers. Ford's government is above the law & doesn't believe in democracy. Say goodbye to your human rights in Ontario.
