This is a Scherzo for piano (in 2/4 time, instead of the traditional 3/4 for Scherzos), that I composed after hearing Pavoratti sing in an older broadcast of Pagliacci. I remembered his wonderful singing, and the tragic ending when Pavoratti, as the clown Canio, kills Nedda and Silvio, the final cruel “joke,” that leaves him alone and weeping from his violent act of jealousy.

Pianist Roman Starkman (born as Roman Naumenko) began playing the Piano at age 7, and eventually earned his Masters Degree of Musical Arts at the Kiev National Conservatory in 2013. During his Conservatory years, Roman became a multiple International Piano Competitions winner. When Roman graduated from the Conservatory, he performed as a Pianist with a Symphony Orchestra in Kiev, performed on Ukrainian television, and on concert stages. In 2014, Roman went to South Korea for 2 years, to work as a nightclub Pianist. Roman has also performed on cruise ships, with Classical Music duos, trios, and as a solo and band Pianist. He now resides once again in Kiev, Ukraine, creating music in his home studio, making recordings, musical arrangements, composing, and performing with a Symphony Orchestra (before the war began). He also performs now at many charity concerts during this war, to help support Ukrainians in need, who are suffering from this terrible and evil Russian invasion.
