RV Disaster! Wrecker to the Rescue!

The landing gear on this 5th wheel trailer collapsed while the owner was trying to hook back up to it in a parking lot and it fell to the ground. I brought the 4×4 wrecker out to lift it back up so he could re hook. Unfortunately the only thing to lift by on the front is the hitch itself, so I used an older flat strap that allowed it to still sit on the 5th wheel aged, then used a pry bar and a jack to slip it back out

  1. The correct way to do this would be any method that does not get a person injured or damage any equipment. In other words, exactly what you did… And like otherers have said, not exactly a lot of places to pick one of those things up from.

  2. That was executed beautifully. I tow a 35 foot fifth wheel and have assisted other people in camp grounds that have experienced jack failures. Never to this extreme where a leg folded up. That was definitely Sketchy! But the camera can never show how comfortable one is with rigging, blocking etc…. Well done!! You are very good with your equipment and it shows. One wrong move and that 5th wheel could have dropped onto the box sides of his truck which judging by the looks of his truck has happened before. lol

  5. I always put the wheel lift on the ground when using the book like that. no weight on the springs and the person can run over it if need be. Nice job. I also always carry jack stands with a plate welded on the bottom to hold things up if need be to unhook. Jack stands under the frame of the rv then he could just back into the hitch. People who do rvs allot carry heavy duty screw jacks so they can raise and lower from the frame. I always wanted some three stage bottle jacks for jobs like this. I carry a alm 3 ton harbor freight jack to use with my tollie dollies if needed also.

  6. Job well done with what you had to do it for sure. I ended up putting a line lock or brake lock on all my trucks so I could lock the brakes with pressure on the line as well as the park brake. works for hard pulls backwards. I think the best brake locks are call bucket truck brake locks. Nice job.

  7. Repairing that ram might not be that hard. We repaired outrigger rams on 15 ton hydraulic cranes without removing them by using the Loctite O ring repair kits which allow you to make an O ring by gluing it together sized to fit.
