Questions raised over Albanese government's new fuel efficiency standards

Liberal Senator Dave Sharma says he is a “little sceptical” about the Albanese government’s fuel efficiency standards.

The federal government revealed it will set minimum standards for manufacturers on fuel consumption and carbon emissions in vehicles they sell in Australia.

There are concerns the target of a 60 per cent emissions reduction in vehicles by 2030 may price popular four-by-fours and Utes out of the market.

“There is a question about whether this policy has got the balance right between reducing emissions on the one hand but still enabling consumers to have choice and keeping vehicles affordable on the other,” Mr Sharma told Sky News Australia.

“We see with Chris Bowen’s track record in other areas of his portfolio, he often plunges headlong into setting targets without thinking too much through the detail of how those are actually going to be met, whether the technology is there, whether the market’s functioning the way that he expects them to.

“I’m a little sceptical about this one but I’ll wait to see the details.”

  1. 9 years of Liberal Party economic incompetence and mismanagement have led to our current high cost of living. Climate change deniers, and Putin supporters, are responsible for our high cost of power.

No one is listening to these fools

Tensions Rise in the North as Russia Bolsters Arctic Presence with New Icebreaker

The launching ceremony for the icebreaker, named Leningrad, of the Project 22220 series, was held in St. Petersburg a few days ago. Putin's personal attendance at the event signals the project's critical importance to Russia's strategic interests in the Arctic.

Leningrad, a fifth-generation nuclear-powered icebreaker, represents the fifth production unit of the Project 22220 series. These icebreakers, the largest of their kind globally, are pivotal to Russia's plan to assert its dominance in the Arctic region. Such vessels are essential for any significant economic ventures in the northern latitudes due to their unparalleled capability to navigate through thick ice.

La Razón's coverage emphasized the strategic significance of the Leningrad icebreaker: "This is the Leningrad, a powerful Russian nuclear icebreaker with which Putin aims to deliver a decisive strategic advantage."

The development of icebreakers like the Leningrad poses a considerable challenge to Western countries attempting to compete with Russia in the Arctic. The United States and other nations lack a comparable fleet of ships with the ability to break through three-meter-thick ice and lead maritime expeditions. Russia's continued advancement in icebreaker technology ensures its stronghold in the Arctic, making its position in the region nearly unassailable."

  4. Electric cars are a myth. Politicians don't care if electric cars – don't work. This is the problem of modern labor. You just have to make out – on any issue – they will go to some stupid – way off idea. That car manufacturers wont touch. Car manufacturers are only making electric cars – because governments are telling them to do it.

That business model is going to send car manufacturers broke. Or car manufacturers – simply make petrol and diesel cars – more expensive to pay for a huge inventory of electric cars they can't sell.

There's a lot of lies – labor and the greens wont own up to – on energy policy. You can't rush development. The battery technology of electric cars – is where there a huge range of roadblocks.

Toyota was the leading manufacturer. And hybrid cars – was the best of both worlds. And Toyota still believes that to be the case. That tells you something.

Politicians are not engineers. They have got into the mode of – they make out they know everything. And people don't understand – labor and the greens lie to you every day. As they have invented this make believe world. And people like what they hear. They just don't understand – it is never possible.

And if labor does not sober up to reality. Voters – will throw lying labor out at the next general federal election.

  5. Good bye all car brands and only brands that will be available are cheap Chinese electric cars. And huge job losses as car manufactures wont be able to afford the fines and adapt in such short time frame! Government is completely incompetent!

  6. So all big car brands will go broke in Australia and huge job losses due to the high fines that will be given. Only cheap Chinese electric cars will take over. Government are so incompetent! No way brands can adapt to this in such short timeframe!

  8. Pricing 4WDS and utes out of the market is a design feature, not an oversight by a government who would happily reach into your shower to adjust the water temperature to whatever they thought you deserved.

  9. The purpose of these unattainable standards is to destroy the market for ICE automobiles. The left did the same thing in the US.
At some point you can't get any more energy out of a gallon of gasoline. It isn't infinite.
