  1. Honestly this is offensive to black culture, as the very existence of this film is saying “There were no black queens so we need to make a white one black, because there are only white queens” So they’ve made a film where no matter what race you are, you should be annoyed with it

  2. In my opinion, it just makes no sense. First of all, Cleopatra was a brilliant and amazing woman, but they seem to not really care about that and just focus on the fact that she is black, which is not even true. Second, if they were really inclusive, why not have an Egyptian woman play the role and/or make a serie of actual black historical characters. Those who’s stories ate still untold while other characters are just changed.

  3. Although Cleopatra was not black & was most certainly Greek (as was the entirety of the Ptolemaic dynasty); The Ancient Egyptians themselves were, indeed, black. Artistic representations from The Golden Age of Ramesses II's reign clearly depict both the nobility and martial classes (the ruling castes) as being of Nubian skin-shade. Such can be seen on their painted hieroglyphics, illustrated pottery & funerary sculptures of the age. I can't link to sources on YouTube as the comment will likely be removed, but I urge you to dig up the depictions to see for yourself. Additionally, DNA tests from Ramesses III & his heir reveal obvious & identical haplogroup mimicry between their lineage and Niger-Congo ethnicities south of the Nile; all but confirming that they were, indeed, what can be deemed as "Sub-Saharan African".

Adding unto this even more, Herodotus himself outright states that the Egyptians were indistinguishable from the Colchians & Ethiopians in terms of skin color; going as far as to outright call them "burnt of skin, woolly-hair & thickened lips."

Egyptologist Stuart Tyson Smith states adequately in the 2001 Oxford Dictionary of Ancient Egypt; "Any characterization of race of the ancient Egyptians depends on modern cultural definitions, not on scientific study. Thus, according to modern American standards it is reasonable to characterize the Egyptians as 'black', while still acknowledging the scientific evidence for the physical diversity of Africans."

How modern "egyptians" feel about factual historical context is of relatively little importance; modern Coptic Egyptians descend from the various Arabic incursions into Egypt & hold little relevance to The Ancient Egyptians, just as the Greek Egyptians of Cleopatra's time had descended from the extensive conquests of Alexander & were veritably unrecognizable in comparison to their Egyptian predecessors.

Ultimately, The Founder & Father of Egyptology (The Study of Egypt) himself, Jean Francois Champollion, sums it up best "The ancient Egyptians belonged to a race quite similar to the Kennous or Barabras, present inhabitants of Nubia. In the Copts of Egypt we do not find any of the characteristic features of the ancient Egyptian population. The Copts are the result of cross-breeding within all of the nations that have successively dominated Egypt; it is wrong to seek in them the principal features of the old race."

  4. it's the Zeitgeist and Jada Smith's adherence to afrocentrism, a very racist ideology originally originating in the US but refined by a Senegalese historian.
BTW Jada Smith did hire real egyptologists for this documentary. But we do not iknow how much of the interviews were not used because they did not fit into the narative she wanted to tell. Shelley Haley (the woman who said that her garndmother told he that Cleopatra was balck)) is a real classicist but she is also a black feminist who used both this and a critical race approach in both studying and teaching of Classics. It is quite possible that this documentary will destroy her reputation.

  6. To be honest I find the "girl boss" bullshit in this so called documentary even more insulting than the racial nonsense. Cleopatra wasn't black, period. If she was we would have known about it, she was a very famous person in her time and rivers of ink were put on parchment describing her, her life and her death. None mention her being of another bloodline than pure Ptolemy. Race wasn't as important in classical times, it became a thing later on when the Europeans pulled ahead technologically from the rest of the world and began to see themselves as "superior". But blood was. Being of the Ptolemaic bloodline, a direct descendant of the greek macedonian god king that founded the Ptolemaic dynasty was of utmost importance in claiming the title of Pharaoh. It was in fact the only thing that mattered. If Cleopatra was black, which the Ptolemy family certainly wasn't, this would have been used by her enemies to undermine her claim to the throne. They didn't. Because she wasn't. She wasn't a boss bitch either. She was a puppet ruler for the Romans, installed by Cesar who defeated her brother and then supported by Mark Anthony. She had money but little to no power and had to use her wealth, charms and family heritage instead. She was a major political figure and a force to be reckoned with but she wasn't a warrior or a general. Portraying her the way these hacks did, training with swords and giving orders to armies is a complete historical farce. That's fantasy not a historical documentary.
