When former President Jacob Zuma accused senior state prosecutor Billy Downer of leaking confidential medical information to journalist Karyn Maughan, she couldnโ€™t have imagined how severely it would impact her life. For several months, Zuma pursued a private prosecution of both, placing Maughan in the crosshairs of some of the former presidentโ€™s staunchest supporters. In court, Downer and Maughan emerged victorious. But she endured such violent online vitriol that she was forced to retreat to her family home. As a journalist, sheโ€™s not alone. It seems South Africaโ€™s judiciary is being used as a battleground to harass and intimidate journalists and prevent them from doing their work. Carte Blanche examines how media freedom is under attack.

  2. Shocking video, wouldn't put it above the elite in our country to silence their opposition.

Also, having Derek at the end felt…odd. Not sure if it's just me.

  3. I honestly don't think they care about whether we are aware of their criminal behaviour (or even the extent of it). I feel like lately there has been an escalated level of violence and intimidation as a strategy used to frighten people into being "obedient".

  4. Glad Carte Blanche covered this…. Journalistic freedomis essential to counter- balance the propaganda served up by the legacy media. Sadly all poly – tics is full of greedy and corrupt individuals…no matter what ideology they espouse. ๐Ÿ˜ข

  5. Its been said that Zuma is putting up a Stalingrad defense. His strategy is to tie his charges up in litigation until he dies. I doubt if he is ever going to wear a prison uniform. Perhaps Duduzane. I am not holding my breath.

  6. If you get threats then it means you are doing your job properly and they are guilty of what you have published. Zuma actions makes him even more quilty people that's innocent brush those nonsense allegations off and move one.

  7. I remember wanting to be an investigative journalist during my matric year. I wanted to be known for unearthing the truth. My family LITERALLY begged me not to pursue it and luckily other forms of media bit the bug. Main reason was it was not a safe career because of how our country was structured. I have no regrets.

  10. The corruption being committed by the so called political leaders is already at its heights. Imagine how much worse it would be if journalists weren't legally allowed to uncover these politicians' scandals.
