The relic castle situation really has shook some devs and I don’t blame them.

  1. Like everyone else mentioned, The biggest problem is making appealing creature design, a couple get close like temtem, coromon, palworld (to me at least) but you can never shake the feeling of "thats just a pokemon with different colors" or something.

Theres also the combat, pokemon's is unique in the industry and trying to alter it slightly often leads to some clunkiness from the aforementioned games, while making something totally different like action, strategy or something just makes it a whole different game.

  2. I'm working on both a Pokemon Fangame and an original Monster Tamer, so I see the pros in both options.
For my original game I have full control, can make my own world, make money from it, all the benefits of making your IP. However, I also still occasionally work on my fangame, there are things I literally can't do in an original game that I can do in a fan game, like improve things I feel need to be improved in Pokémon.
I can buff and nerf Pokémon, I can improve Ice Type, I can make Pokémon abilities be related to their Pokédex entries, things like that. It's fun to add my spin to an existing world that I love, it's fun to see how things could be if I had control of the Pokémon IP.

My original game has priority over the fangame, obviously, it has more pros; but I still want to work on my version of the Pokémon world.

(Not sure why I'm writing this, but it's gonna help with the algorithm. Ok bye.)

  3. Never reveal a fangame until it's complete, that way even if Nintendo does C&D it would already be too late for them since the fangame is already in circulation on the internet.

It sucks since your project won't get the exposure it needs but it's better than being cancelled outright.

  4. It just sucks because a lot of people who make pokemon-like games try to be too different. Id like a complete copy and paste with all the quality of life improvements and no brainers that theyve refused to implement. Also the OC designs almost always tend to be ass.

  5. Maybe I start downloading all these fangames before nintendo drops that tactical nuke.
Thing is, this is just strengthening my resolve to never buy another Pokemon game–maybe instead of attacking the fans they make an actually decent game for once in like fifteen years now. Legends was an anomaly, scarvi is unfortunately the norm.

  6. I love Pokémon but it's better to make your own games instead of a fan game of the series so you have more freedom on your monster designs and storytelling the way you wanted to tell about them like how we get games like Palworld, Monster Hunter Stories, Cassette Beasts, TemTem, Coromon, Nexomon, Digimon, Monster Rancher, and many more Pokémon-like games but has their own identities.

  7. i hope all of those developers atleast get their opportunity to work on an original project that could be as good if not better than all the fan projects that nintendo has been so agaisnt of, i can see so many of those fangames as their own thing with original creatures and not keeping itself limited to being on pokemon's standards, i hope we can atleast have that

  8. Fan game dev here. I've put a lot of previous effort into actually creating a Monster Taming game, but I've been struggling to find a team. I'm developing a (sort of easy-to-do) fan game in order to be able to have a fully finished project for my portfolio with the hope to reach more people, because I'm a game designer and scriptwriter (but not a programmer or an artist, the two positions that help the most when attempting to prove you've got experience) and fan games are accessible in both coding and spriting, things that although I can sort of do I'm not a specialist on.

I would not make a fan game if I wasn't almost obliged to do one in order to prove my 7 years of experience in projects that mainly failed to be released because of others abandoning the project (usually for work reasons, which I completely understand).

  9. I don't know while 10k people will got it into the wrong uhhh how does that saying go?
anyway they should make their own stuff, just with enough info that the pokemon people see what potential money or ideas they are letting go.
I do think they are a bit stupid nothing more.

  10. All I care about is Radical Red, is that going to be okay? I don't care about original fan games. I just like creators taking what Pokémon used to be and expanding on it greatly. Hence Radical Red.

  11. It's been quite a while since I played Phoenix Rising but them saying that they were more about the narrative than the Pokémon is…a stretch.
I am intrigued by what they can do now after freeing themselves of the Pokémon formula.
They had a lot of good ideas…but those were mostly Pokémon ideas in my opinion.

  12. Went a company can sue/take down you for a mod who don't make money and not even there game.

That unhealthy business decision. Even other company like Bandai, Capcom or even Rockstar (With so many GTA) don't do that. Or i never hear that.

  13. I definitely don't blame Pokemon Fan Game devs for making their own game, over making (said) fan game. BUT, there is the honest truth that the Pokemon IP is what brings attention to these games. Without it, your game has to be 100x better, in order to make even a bit of profit. Not to mention the "stigma" of being a Pokemon clone. An issue that Palworld even struggled with… and look how successful that game was.

Again, that is no fault of the indie game developers; but it's a rough, brutal world out there. They have to decide to risk losing it all and making the Pokemon fan game that they want, or to go all in as a business and make a completely new IP and hope that it gets an audience. It's not an easy choice.

  14. Honestly it makes sense it always kinda bugged me when people make a idea that could be a mon game in itself and they just make them pokemon cause there fans … and like i get it but this idea is good on its own you could make something great

  15. Well done TPC. You not only pushed the more passionate fans away, you just gave more power to the competition, as well as increasing the number of competitors, all in the age where your games are disappointing people left and right. You played yourself.

  16. I agree devs should make uniqe monster tamer games. What sucks is that by doing this your competing against the largest IP on the planet. But more competition is usually a good thing.

  17. I agree that Pokemon fan game creators should ditch the Pokemon IP and make their own. I know it will be challenging, but it better than having to deal w/ Nintendo's legal team.

  18. This is actually why I shifted from making my own Pokémon fan game to making my own original IP but instead of it being a game, I made it into a book series.

Pokémon: Obsidian Scales became Dynix: The King of Beasts Festival, because I did not want the Pokémon company to take down the work that I was going to put into the game, so I decided "Screw it. I'll just go ahead and do it my own way", so instead of making it a game, I figured turning it into a book series will let me have a lot more leniency, and I can do exactly what I want with the franchise.

  19. Sooooo…. since pokemon is stopping people from paying homage to pokemon by making not for profit fangames, they are i stead creating competitors that can now sell their games and may actually take a share (albeit probably small amount) of the sales pokemon wouldve made. Can we get a slow clap please? These fan games are usually better than the mainline games themselves, all it takes is for one team to make a franchise that will actually compete against the pokemon games to take massive sales away. Good job Pokemon Co.

  20. While I can't ever see it happening, it would be somewhat ironic if the Relic Castle exodus caused a group of people to develop a monster taming game that ends up being absolutely huge as a result.

  21. I've been developing my fan game, and have considered separating it from the pokemon ip, I'm ok with making the remaining monsters to cover for it. My battle mechanics are even already pretty un-pokemon like, but I kinda want to keep it pokemon because I find novelty in "using existing pokemon in a setting with new mechanics" interesting – take Legends Arceus for example.
Having said that my pokemon-to-new-design ratio is like 1:3 – even counting new forms as the '1'

  22. If the fan game is made in the engine that Nintendo uses then they're screwed but if its their own engine or something else then they could publish the game as a stand alone! Or even better maybe make it a fan game of another franchise like nexomon, temtem or coromon.

  23. A couple things to note:
    1. The Relic Castle DMCA was not a targeted attack by TPCI (The Pokemon Company International) themselves, rather by an automated third party source. So it was much more of a "wrong place at the wrong time" situation.
    2. No individual fangames, developers, or resources have received any PROVEN legal action since Relic Castle's DMCA
    3. A DMCA/Takedown request is not as much as a "death of a project" as many people think it is, as Relic Castle was able to come back with all of it's contents.
    4. The last time an unmonetized fangame received a C&D was Prism in 2016, which I can only assume was because they promoted their game during the promotional period of Sun and Moon, and planned to release the game on a holiday, when Nintendo probably earns most of their sales.

The number of fangames that have received any form of legal action is less than 20, and the whole thing get's completely blown out of proportion constantly.

I hate being negative towards another fangame development team, but Phoenix rising was just in Dev hell for years and they likely saw this as a way out. They've used the "nintendo scary, they might ban us" excuse in the past to avoid showing off any development screenshots. Meanwhile, game's like Insurgence, Xenoverse, Radical red, and Infinite fusion have thrived for years with tens of millions of youtube views, and hundreds of thousands of discord members.

I'm a fangame developer myself, so of course my goal with this message isn't to defend nintendo, I'm just sick of hearing so many people tell me that my project will be shut down.

  24. Pokémon company: *releasing a bunch of buggy and uninspired games for the past years, despite criticism * 😃
Fans: We'll fix that and make pokémon games to cater to us players!
Also the Pokémon company: You're making us look bad and you all should STOP! ☹

  25. Phoenix Rising is the fan game i've been watching for years now and am still looking forward to, but with the mention of new IP's it's something i would love to see something original from. I love the feel of the game and region so much. It's quest system and storyline has so much potential. I hope the newer management of it can truly allow it to shine. I say new but it's been quite a while. Time just feels so mashed up to me over the past few years that i honestly can't keep track.
