My 2022 England World Cup Squad & Starting XI

It’s less than three weeks until Gareth Southgate will name his 26 man squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, and he has got some big decisions to make.

From injury problems to Kyle Walker and Reece James to the dilemma around who to take as backup to Harry Kane, England’s squad is far from settled, and the starting XI throws up a whole load more questions.

So in this video, HITC Sevens names what would be his 26 man England squad and starting XI, the squad & XI that he expects Southgate to name, and then compares the two.

  1. There's definitely some form of politics involved behind the scenes, no way Southgate got 100% free reign to choose who to bring in without any input or nudging from other parties.

  2. Sterling is done. Ffs. His best movements are left cheek to right cheek of his arse on the bench, He could have been world class but got used to being a squad player,,,,, which is what most players feel in top teams in the UK as opposed to european leagues. . Sterling would have had more career momentum in a foreign league.

  3. Pickford has to be one of the most overrated goalkeepers out there. He's one of those players that only English people seem to rate and it makes me wonder if they've ever actually watched him. He's got way too many jaw droppingly stupid mistakes in him and he is dodgy at best with the ball at his feet, which is often compounded by rash, even emotional decision making. Those two parts of his game have and will continue to prevent him from playing for a big club that's competing for trophies. He's better than Pope (who I don't rate at all, as he is so thoroughly incompetent with the ball at his feet, it makes you wonder how he ever got to this level without developing even a minimal competence receiving and passing the ball. It's safer to put the ball out of play than passing to Pope, so I wouldn't even have him in the squad). I'd start Ramsdale over both 100% of the time, and I don't consider Ramsdale to be particularly special, but he is more well-rounded than the other 2 options. But, really the state of England's goalkeeping dept is shocking

  4. Gotta question Kalvin Phillips's inclusion in the team. What has he really done to deserve even a sniff around the world cup squad? Not blaming him for his injuries and stuff but James Maddison has done such a good job in that dreaded Leicester side. Although, I do understand their positions are different, I still think Maddison should comfortably get the nod ahead of Kalvin Phillips and JWP can play there. and in a state of absolute emergency, Eric Dier can do a feasible job there.

  5. I wouldn’t say Foden is undoubtedly a better player than maddison. It’s debatable in my eyes. Maddison has far more goal contributions in 2022 (and he doesn’t have haaland scoring from every cross or pass in the box😂) maddison should 100% be on that plane. I think I saw only kane has more goal contributions than him in 2022. How can he be left out after the year he’s had.

  6. Have to say, I like the look of your starting XI. Hard to leave out Saka, but the way you've set up allows us to change to the front three preferred by Southgate with the same personnel or by bringing a Saka/Grealish on from the bench quite easily.

I'm pretty interested to see how Southgate plays the group games, as he may have to use them to (re)integrate a couple of players who haven't played in the England set-up for quite some time.
