November 9th, 1960 was a momentous day in Lee Iacocca’s career. That’s when the engineer-in-training turned fleet salesman became general manager of the Ford division. While Dearborn’s models had sold rather well, the brand had gained a somewhat stodgy reputation. Iacocca sought to change that. Under his watch, Ford got back into racing and made options such as bucket seats, floor-mounted shifters, and larger engines available in some of its mainstream offerings. This wasn’t just done for fun and games. Ford wanted to capture the attention of younger buyers who craved something more exciting than the dull sedans that their parents drove. While the company’s newfound vigor brought the desired crowd into showrooms, Iacocca felt they could do much more.
On April 17, Ford finally took the wraps off of the Mustang. Initial sales far exceeded Ford’s estimations. All available Mustangs were gone and more than 22,000 orders had been taken during that initial weekend. According to Henshaw, there was even a 3-month waiting list at one point.
The general public was stricken with Mustang fever, and while the motoring press liked it overall, the response from that realm was a bit more grounded.

First and here to say that Pinto, Fox and New Edge are the best.
1974-2004
🍷🗿 ❤️
Thank you for you videos, I'm glad they keep coming 🙏
So happy you've got around to doing one for the Mustang!
I'm sure you have lots of ideas on future videos, just a gentle reminder if you haven't thought about the Mazda RX7 yet, I'm sure we would love to see one
Barchetta's back, baby! Welcome back!
Jim Farley won't let the Mustang fall.
Well worth the wait as always 👌🏻
I bought a new blue SS 350 4spd Camaro, and my friend brought a new Orange 302 Boss 4spd Mustang .. We had fun road racing and out running the police ..I miss the good ole days..🍷😎
Iacocca DODGED a bullet with the Mustang.
YEAHH
Ya what Fall? Mustang is still the stud pony.
I always thought the 71 to 73 Mustang was the 2nd Gen as they look nothing like the 64 to 70 Mustangs.
I am still a "mustanger"
The mustang didn't fail it's been in production from 1964 to 2024.The mustang is a success.
I don't know what all those people were complaining about.1971 to 1973 were beautiful. The 1974 pinto based one is understandable to complain about.I know the gas crisis happened but they could've built a better car on a midsize platform.
28:46 looks like the front end of the 1973 Ford LTD.
Not a great title man, doesn’t make much sence
Great collection! I bought my first LV when I was 25 and I've only used that bag a few times haha. Also, I love your clutch! I have an Eva clutch with the DE print and I love the little chain. But I don't want to spend that much money right now and the kislux always gets me the bag I want and it's just as good as the LV and one of my favorites. Durability
A very nice, comprehensive review of the History of The Mustang! 🤙🤙😎. Thank you, I enjoyed the whole video! 🐍🐍🐍
This is without doubt, the best Mustang documentary I’ve ever seen.
The final fall of the pony car will be in the 2020s as those who can remember the original are dying off!!! It was a shame it don't cover the Mustang 2, the fox bodies, and the last retro mustangs.
Mustang may have stumbled But it never FELL !!!😊
The mustang 2 was beautiful especially the Ghia, The performance drop was not appreciated. Although it was the energy crisis, I got a ticket for going 58 mph !!😮
this is a VERY peculiar channel, it's content is VERY erratic and i wonder WHO is behind this, the narrator in this video, do you have a name? and the BMW 507 a failure, well design wise, ABSOLUTELY not, and THAT car could NOT break a brand like BMW, but clickbait etc, and speak of the devil, yes you have quite the fondness for Japanese cars, though you ask to your viewers to come with ideas, so that would explain a lot there, but there's soo much that doesn't add up by just what you make videos about and it's titles, and it's not just clickbait, they just do not make sense, and are, in many cases, really??? how can you come with a BOLD statement like as some of you videos suggest, and the number of views are VERY erratic, over the course since this channel's inception, and you even include a couple of videos about buildings, like the former twin towers, it's like you STILL don't know what do do, although you claim that design is YOUR main focus, but there's something that doesn't add up here, and concerning the Mustang, one of if not THE most iconic American car, and being my personal all time fave car too, the former is not my opinion, and like the even more all over iconic Porsche's 911, you can ALWAYS tell it's a 911, WHICH is what i guess you're aiming for in this video as for MANY of us Mustang enthusiasts and those who understand aesthetic, and with a like the Mustang and it's UNIQUE look, which they change come '71, and what became what could've been a short lived 2nd Gen. and personally i have a soft spot for the '71 SportsRoof with the Boss 351, and THEN as for many of us, the Mustang logo was put on cars that HAD NOTHING to do with the ICONIC design, until what Ford started with what is known as the retro-futuristic style, and you do have a video about this topic, and the 2 other big of the American 3, followed, what could've been a short lived nostalgia trip, but TIMELESS designs, even with a new twist, WILL NEVER DIE, if it ain't broke do NOT fix it, and this has also been more and more popular in Europe and Japan too with what is known as Heritage designs/models of a brand's most beloved cars/models/design's , MOSTLY from the what IS known as the 2nd most important decade in automotive history, the 1960's and also the 70's, early more so, where many brands WW would copy the American Muscle car design, now the reason for making this video now, my GUESS is the fact of Ford's Mustang GTD just became the first sub 7min car around the legendary grüne hölle aka Nurburgring, and though this was done in sub par conditions, which means ONLY that they WILL do a much better time than they did, and as to all the debate concerning this lap time, were there are a lot of young, wanna be race car drivers, doing their best to downplay this effort done by Ford, an American car company, rooted in racing, one of the big 3, and the first to go WW, and AS Ford, and has over the decades PROVEN that if Ford wants to, in ANY type of racing, THEY WILL WIN, not too shabby, or rather quite humbling, so you can say what you will about Ford, and specially if you're not from the US (like myself) you will, be not "impressed" by these dumb V8 powered cars, yeah, good luck with that soy boys girls, go and start a car company or build something that people will remember you by, as ANYONE can do YT and go bla bla bla, like i do in writing, albeit, i do not have the TIME to do what i now do, so go figure, and after having heard in the background while writing this, you skip a lot of important info, but then again, are there humans behind this? if so, you are VERY young, and that's all good, though the rise and fall of the Mustang COULD be '71, though '74 when it REALLY happened, and besides, the Mustang re-emerged in 2005, so it would be more, of a rise and fall….only to rise again, but you go waaay into a lot of detalis, and I AM a detail freak, and you're talking about my care here, but this and i have a feeling most of the what comes across as erratic and we do NOT know where we wanna go channel and you videos also have some of the same issues, at least the longer ones, but my fave YT channels are those made by and who ALSO naturally FEATURE the people behind the channels, this is KING in what is becoming a more and more faceless, bland, no contact, highly destructive and dystopian future, and humanity has never been a divided as we have become for the last 5-10 years now, coincidence?, i think not, or rather i know so, so how's about you start a podcast too, were you can discuss car designs and so on, no….? all AI in disguise? have lovey x-mas whoever hides behind this name of yet another faceless YT channel, with erratic content….hmm cheerz 🙂
the Mustang has been in production more than 60 yrs and sold around 10.5 million units in the US though it does since 1978 it carries a Gas Guzzler tax for not meeting the EPA fuel economy target which for 2025 was 54.5 MPG combined while for ex a Toyota Camry doesn't carry the gas Guzzler tax because its closer to meeting the fuel econ target while for ex a Toyota Supra which is in a similar class as a Mustang does have that tax because its average fuel economy is 27 MPG combined and it debuted around the time Corporate Average Fuel econ standards went into effect in the late 1970s though generally Japanese cars have better fuel efficiency than their American/European counterparts for ex a 1987 Sterling 825 averages 19 MPG same as an Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royale with a 231 CID or 3.8 L V6 engine though the Sterling had a 165 CID or 2.7 L V6
Fantastic documentary. Thank you
Great video and a great car.
More of a Cuda man myself but I do like the Mustangs and anyone that doesn't like a Mercury Cougar Eliminator I don't think I care to know them.🧐
Why are these people “axing” questions?
I think the 71-73 mustang is the best design overall, the front end matched with the raked mach 1 fastback roofline is unforgettable. I think they have better interiors and driving characteristics overall as well. But i can see where people were coming from. It probably wouldn't have been as bad, had the maverick been given more options, including actual performance models. By the time the 71 mustang was out. The people who wanted something closer to a relatively smaller, less expensive 64 1/2 didnt have much to look at.
What an EXCELLENT video ….. thank you !
