It could be dry pockets in the soil, that hold salts from any nutrients that have been added. So under watering, dry periods, dry pockets will deposit a lot of salt, once the soil dries out. This will lock up everything. Try slowly bottom watering every third watering. When watering pots from the top, water, wait a bit, water, wait a bit, and water n wait until run -off occurs in the bottom basin. EM-1 ( effective microbes) and solutions containing ionic sulphate minerals will help reverse this. Hope this helps.
I don't have any data on if one dry out could cause the yellowing. I can tell you when I switched to drain to waste, my plants always look happy and grow faster than ever. Foot on the gas. Now that's inside. Happy growing

Organics is the way to go two cups of worm castings to a 3 gallon pot and I don't even use a pH pen anymore add tablespoon of Epsom salt or azomite tablespoon of bone meal when I flip to bud other than feeding the microbes some blackstrap molasses just water transplant up two sizes and throw into bud
