Meal Planning for a 4-Day Backpacking Trip

Meal planning for a backpacking trip doesn’t have to be complicated.

Here’s how I meal planned for my recent 4-day backpacking trip along the Trans-Catalina Trail on Catalina Island in Southern California:

First, I figured out how many meals I’d need for the trip:

Day 1: I’d need lunch, dinner, snacks and electrolytes. I wouldn’t need breakfast because we were eating breakfast in Avalon before starting our hike that morning.

Day 2: I’d need breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and electrolytes. I ended up having brunch up at Airport in the Sky so I didn’t eat my planned lunch for the day.

Day 3: I’d need breakfast, lunch, snacks and electrolytes. I wouldn’t need dinner because our plan was to have dinner in the Two Harbors Restaurant after setting up camp.

Day 4: This was a repeat of Day 3. We ended up having a celebratory dinner at the Two Harbors Restaurant to celebrate completing the trail.

So in total, for this trip I would need:

3 Breakfasts (dividing each bag into 2 servings)
4 Lunches
2 Dinners (+ an extra Dinner, just incase)
20+ Snacks (More than I’d need, but I’d rather have more than not enough)
5 Electrolytes (1 for each day + an extra)

And that’s it. Easy breezy!!
