This song is about the air battle during the Shanghai Incident that broke out in January 1932. The battle was the first in which Japanese forces shot down an enemy plane, and this song was written to praise that achievement.
Following the outbreak of the Shanghai Incident, the Imperial Japanese Navy dispatched an air corps consisting of the aircraft carriers “Kaga” and “Hosho” to the waters off Shanghai to support ground forces. On the Republic of China side at the incident was a volunteer corps of American veterans, and its aerial strength was a Boeing 218 piloted by Robert Short. The Japanese military obtained information that he based at an airfield in Suzhou and dispatched six planes led by Captain Susumu Kotani there. When they reached the sky over Suzhou, they encountered Robert’s Boeing. In the battle, Kotani was killed in action, but they shot the Boeing down.
