Kolkata Metro: India’s First Underwater Metro

India is getting its first underwater metro. Kolkata Metro’s rake ran beneath the Hooghly River. A total of two rakes—MR-612 and MR-613—have witnessed this historic event. The trial run from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade will commence soon and be conducted for the next seven months.

After the successful completion of the trial run and the Commissioner of Railway Safety’s inspection, the commercial service will begin. It is expected that the regular run of metro rail on the 4.8 km underground section will begin later this year.
