July 2023 Kickstarter Board Games – Fear of Missing Out X

July 2023 Kickstarter Board Games – Fear of Missing Out X

A new series where on a monthly basis I talk over some key Kickstarter Crowdsurfing projects that are on the go. My personal thoughts, good and bad, whether I’m thinking of backing it, what’s holding me back, but mainly just a means of talking about some upcoming releases.

Who Am I?

One single batchelor from the UK talking about his passion for board games and the people who play them! I support small content creators, board game cafes and go against the status quo when it comes to the board game industry. I give my honest opinions without bias towards any publishers or designers and will not hold back if I don’t like a game.

The Broken Meeple is a variety channel that hosts all kinds of board game content from reviews to Top 10 lists to playthroughs to live stream collaborations with special guests (predominantly small channels who deserve more exposure).

I look forward to engaging with you, the community on my live streams or in the comments on my videos!

  1. Gloomhaven: Buttons & Bugs is a a follow-up to well-regarded Gloomholdin', in-hand table-less game, made by a fan. Plus it has magical franchise word on the cover, so here's your answer. The ultimate dream is probably getting 80% of Gloomhaven fix in 20% of time and effort. Physical GH can be a fiddly pain, yes.

  2. So many KS games are underdeveloped, overproduced, entirely average games. The difference between the average KS and a game developed by an established publisher – one who is putting its own money (and reputation) on the line with every new title is night and day.

I have had too many entirely average 7/10 games from KS over the last year or two. And 7/10 games don't get played very often – they're just not good enough to stand out from the crowd. In many cases, games that could have been 8/10 games (and therefore played much more often) missed out because the effort was put into delivering extra content (expansions, KS exclusives etc etc) instead of proper development.

And I dare say that most of the games you cover in this video are going to be just like the above.

Time for us to show some restraint and stop backing.

  3. Tempted by shards of infinity, the full package in one box and it seems more interesting than most deck builders (I usually find them to be a bit auto pilot usually)

  4. I’m surprised you did not mention Underground on Gamefound. Looks like they can ship to UK 👍🏻. I knew nothing about this game till you mentioned it a while back and saw it on Gamefound so watched your video and I really need this game now.

  5. I jumped on Buttons & Bugs as soon as I heard it. I don't have Gloomhaven or Frosthaven, but I have started playing Jaws of the Lion. The big things I like is that it's a short playtime solo game (I haven't built much tolerance for big heavy solo games), and it looks like it still gives a similar hand management puzzle to classic Gloomhaven. For $15 (+Shipping), I'm willing to give it shot.

  6. On Nestlings: don’t forget that Shem Phillips also did Legacy of Yu, a solo only game. So that sounds quite promising for the solo mode !

On Planet Unknown: apparently players have started going to IKEA to buy “ÖVERMÄTT” to use as a lid… a €3.99 solution for a lid cover. Hilarious !

  7. I really like Coloma but ended up passing on this Kickstarter (going to wait for retail). By the time we've paid shipping and VAT it's going to be way less to wait I think… I would have liked the big box but as you say it just seemed a bit pricey for just a box….
