Japan Arms Its Southern Islands As Tensions Rise In East China Sea | CNA Correspondent

In December 2022, Japan unveiled its largest military buildup since World War 2 – taking aim at China’s growing military assertiveness in the region. But Japan’s military expansion and efforts to contain China began long before that. Michiyo Ishida was given access to Japan’s new military bases on the Ryukyu islands in the southernmost part of the country where she witnessed Japanese efforts to put up a defence barrier in the East China Sea. Under Japan’s new national security policy, missile units capable of reaching as far as China will be deployed on new military bases on the southern islands by 2026. Officials say Japan will be safer with the new deterrence power. But the military buildup has stoked fears among locals.

  1. Japan is a joke these days and is nothing mofre than a client state of America. China should drive out the Japs and return the Ryuku Islands to the Ryukyan as an independent state.

  2. What's stupid about this is, they oppose expansion of the military but the moment they get invaded or chased out of their fishing grounds, it's the military's fault for being weak. CHINA IS NOT YOUR FRIEND. Take it from us who can no longer fish in our EEZ despite Hague ruling. CHINA DOES NOT RESPECT INTERNATIONAL LAWS.

  3. Peace with China? I think it goes both ways. Monumental task lol
Occupation by China would mean total eradication of Japanese culture, racial discrimination, human rights violations unaddressed, its spoken language forbidden, protestors silenced.

  4. Every year, August 15th is the day Japan announces its unconditional surrender. South Korea calls this day "Liberation Day." To celebrate the independence and liberation of the Korean peninsula from Japanese colonial rule, South Korean people held a parade on the streets of downtown Seoul holding the Taegeuk flag. In another event the day before, the South Korean people also performed a performance of beating the "Japanese army" and kicking the "Rising Sun Flag".

  5. Great article. I enjoyed it very much. It is definately information that needs to be heard. However, I listen to these videos while driving. Much the same as a podcast. I can not read the translations. An audio dub of the foreign language into English, instead of text translations, makes it available on the road. I don't know any advantage not having audio dubs of foreign languages. Thank you for listening.

  6. If Japan ever is involved in military conflict with China again, it will pay for its accumulated sins in the two Sino-Japanese Wars and the Second World War. Its remilitarisation efforts better be aimed eastwards rather than west,

  7. Japan might have more support if it were to stop re-writing history, label UNIT-731 as a war crime unit, cease and desist celebrating Class A-warcriminals.
Imperial Japan killed over 18 million people, and Japan, like Germany, needs to reconcile the past by admitting to it.

  8. Ryukyu archipelago isn't Japan islands.
    It's China islands.
During the dark days of Manchu Dynasty, under the rules of Empress Dowager, the empire was corrupt.
The people were not allowed to have big knives in their houses for fear that the civilians may rise against the empire.
The soldiers were not allowed to carry rifles for fear the rifles will fell to the rebels.
Until the empire was invaded by eight countries, this include seven European countries and Japan.
The Invaders was lead by England.
The Manchu army was no match and lose against the foreign invaders armed with rifles and cannons.
The foreign invaders took control of the coastal provinces and cities of China.
Russia took the Far East, France took Indo-China, British took Shanghai, Hong Kong, Canton, Himalayan kingdoms and Myanmar, Dutch took Taiwan, Portuguese took Macau island, Germany took Shantung province, Japan took Hokkaido island and Ryukyu archipelago.
I think only America didn't occupied any Chinese city or province.
But they took some of China gold and priceless treasures.

  9. And "PARABELUM" means what ? It means, : "IF YOU SEEK PEACE. PREPARE FOR WAR" I Just Purchased 1000 Rounds of 9 MM Parabellum ammo.
It's GOOD That japanese Civilians WORRY. It's good they DEMONSTRATE. Why do they do that.
THEY DESIRE PEACE. If you get along well with a Neighbor. There is PEACE. If a Neighbor becomes hostile, throwing CHUNKS OF STEEL IN YOUR YARD to damage your Tractor. Well you can Move away can;t you? However if you CAN'T MOVE AWAY you do what. YOU PREPARE FOR WAR.

  10. What tensions and who's creating the tensions ? If China has an intention for attacking Japan for some unknown reason would it make their industrial supply chain that interdependent ? Japan just like Germany an American colony and a puppet state .
