The first Indiana Jones movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, isn’t just a great movie. It’s a brilliantly directed one. Steven Spielberg’s skill at blocking and stages scenes is second to none. Today we’ll take a look at some of the ways Spielberg implements blocking and staging using the same method that director Steven Soderbergh uses to analyze films: making the movie black and white, and taking away all of its score and dialogue… allowing us to focus only on the film’s visual storytelling.

  1. A Spielberg movie is filmmaking perfected. Like a chef who spends his life only making grilled cheeses, there is nothing outwardly complex when taken at face value but the underlying techniques, choice of ingredients, and sincere care put into creation transcend all implied simplicity by being a culmination of the medium's past prologue. A mark of true mastery is an ability to build on what has come before with no exhausting pretensions or self indulgent egoism. His films are what they are, not experimental or operating with heavy hands attempting to be more than what they are, which is pure celluloid entertainment. Spielberg stands at the pinnacle of visual story telling with John Ford, Orsen Welles and Akira Kurosawa.

  2. They should release Raiders Of The Lost Ark in Black and White, keeping everything else as it was!
Raiders in B&W really shows the talent used to light the scenes you don't notice as much in color.
This is what is missing from so many movies today…Talent and proper lighting.

  3. I was subscrite yo your channel but turn something great intro something from the caveman age Is to destroy the evolution. When I was child all the TV was in b&w then suddenly appears the color. Color like in real life not like a dog seight. After I belive that all the people of muy age hates the B&W. So I canceles muy subscription. 30 years back I saw Casablanca in B&W, but 10 years back I saw on colores and a whole new world ITS show on you eyes and many things aré good interpreted. Good speed.

  4. This video has popped up in my recommendations multiple times with different thumbnails. Is this a new method to finesse the algorithm or something YouTube is doing that I'm just now noticing?

  5. I just hate the color of newer movies, it's too mutch color or hues for moods, directors thinking their fucking geniuses. Well kid half the time I can't even see wtf I'm looking at because the movie is pitch black. I miss when they where going for realism rather than feelings. Everything is CGI now and it looks like shit.

  6. Does this mean Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was a GOOD movie ❓ or is that only true if it’s seen/scene (both spellings are applicable) 🎥 in BLACK and WHITE with a Trent Reznor score❓❗️

  7. While other's were getting their education at film school. Spielberg was at Universal learning first hand by the master's. Spielberg has said. Raiders was his first movie that was on time. And under budget. And felt comfortable in the job. It is the bridge between old school movie makers sensibilities and the modern day TV/Film makers. Has he made better and more important movies. Sure. Has he made a film as well balanced and simple.Nope. That's why Raiders is a classic. And Spielberg a genius film maker.
Great Video BTW. Really enjoyed it.

Thankfully, you don't have the annoying question-lilt so many young, male, anglo YouTubers do.
