Unfortunately the donghua wasn’t as clear as the book was about Xuanji and Pei Ming’s affair. In the book, Pei Ming was very upfront with the fact that he only wanted a fling and nothing more but Xuanji got too invested. She cut her legs to make him pay attention to her, but while he had people take good care of her, he didn’t give her what she wanted.
If you liked her lore can't wait for you find out the other characters (especially the 4 calamities iykyk) cause the source material for this show is so THICC there's so much backstory for every character, one of the reasons it's my fav novel and yeah the main part of it not the romance even if it's a big part of it

Tian Guan Ci Fu is my favorite novel and I love that you react to donghua. But it only has one season, there is a long way to go. On the other hand Mo Dao Zu Shi has 3 seasons and the story finished. The first one is a MASTERPIECE.

Don't worry about Grandmaster of demonic cultivation (aka MDZS) rn. It is MXTX's most popular book bc (aside from her writing being amazing) it had a very popular live action adaptation called The Untamed. Heaven Official's Blessings (aka TGCF) was her follow up novel. They are both pretty great. MXTX has a way of writing complex characters and worlds that feel very expansive and her plots go crazy too. She really is one of my favorite authors atp. One thing you should know is that both the animated vers and LA for MDZS are complete where as TGCF is waiting on a second season of the animated vers (supposed to come sometime this year) and the LA is (to my knowledge) still going through censors. You could just watch MDZS while waiting for season 2. I'm just as excited to see your reaction to TGCF as I am to MDZS (although if they adapt the book well TGCF might be pushed to first place due to how wild and exciting the plot gets at points. It really earns it's place as an epic of godly proportions)

Yeah sometimes I wonder why this show isn't recommended as more of a horror, supernatural, or fantasy rather than just a bl. The novel is incredible, and if you thought the first couple episodes were dark, its just an appetizer for what's to come.
I will also join in recommending MDZS. It's quite dark as well, and has an amazing plot. Though honestly plot is just what MXTX does the best. She is a genius.
