I Took A 52-Hour Sleeper Train From San Francisco To Chicago

HELLO FRIENDS!! This week we’re taking a 52-hour Amtrak sleeper train across the country! So, I’ve fallen over to the “overnight sleeper train” side of youtube – and I am HOOKED, people. And after watching hours and hours of train content, I decided – it was time to try my own hand at it. So we took the California Zephyr train, which travels from San Francisco to Chicago (and also the other direction as well) – across 7 states and over 2,400 miles!! We experienced everything from delays to endless sauce packets to MANY rock sightings. Would you try traveling across the US by train? And where do you think we should we go next? Or better yet, how should we get there?

  2. This unlocked a memory. One year my family went on vacation with the auto train. From florida to virgina, we got those two people rooms. One room for my grandparents, and the other for mom and me. I swear we all had the BEST sleep of our lives that night.

  3. "Were they real?" What?! Is that an attempt at comedy? Your next assignment is to travel to their known locations which includes several states, and Bolivia & Argentina.

  4. In 2017 me and my husband rode amtrak round trip from Chicago to flagstaff AZ. So almost the same trip as you but twice within about 11 days. Except we didnt get a room. We just sat in the regular seatting. The food was expensive so we packed alot of pbjs and apples and other snacks. It wasn't the worst for as long as we rode. But if we were to do it again we would definitely get a room!

  5. I love trains! My father worked as a train driver before retirement, and as a child we often traveled in the train driver cabin to neighboring cities. Now I live far from my parents and travel to them by train twice a year. It takes 27 hours and I really love this feeling of peace, when you don’t have to rush anywhere, your life is concentrated in a small room and you can eat, read and look out the window at the beautiful landscape.

  6. I love this video! I took the train from Chicago to Boston more than 25 years ago. Coach! I heard so many different accents and saw many takes on fashion. The staff was super professional. I've also taken the overnight from Boston to DC. Super convenient! Thanks for sharing your adventure. I am inspired to try the Zephyr someday.I really appreciate Amtrak, and I wish more investment were made in rail travel in the U.S.

  7. Welcome to Omaha! And my hometown (Papillion) also shows up on that map by name.

I have only taken a real train ride in the US once. By real I mean something that is going from destination to destination, not a ride in an amusement park or a historic train that takes 20 mile trips. I've ridden a lot of trains in Europe and am in love with the idea of transcontinental trip for myself someday.

  8. The US is so fucking gigantic and I'd always wondered why they didn't have trains outside of NY. It's such a nice way to travel bc you don't need to think of driving and stopping over just to sleep.

  9. I used to go cross country on the Sunset Limited a lot 20 years ago. Denver to Florida, Florida to Chicago, Chicago to Denver. That triangle was my "route" as I lived or visited in all 3 locations at the time. There's just something magical about taking the train, like stepping back in time to when journeys were time consuming and became an adventure in themselves. Meeting people, seeing the land go by, sipping booze at night while watching the sky overhead. During my Army years taking trains in Korea and Germany were next level, German trains run on seriously tight schedules.
