Who is Ron Spomer
For 44 years I’ve had the good fortune to photograph and write about my passion – the outdoor life. Wild creatures and wild places have always stirred me – from the first flushing pheasant that frightened me out of my socks in grandpa’s cornfield to the last whitetail that dismissed me with a wag of its tail. In my attempts to connect with this natural wonder, to become an integral part of our ecosystem and capture a bit of its mystery, I’ve photographed, hiked, hunted, birded, and fished across much of this planet. I’ve seen the beauty that everyone should see, survived adventures that everyone should experience. I may not have climbed the highest mountains, canoed the wildest rivers, caught the largest fish or shot the biggest bucks, but I’ve tried. Perhaps you have, too. And that’s the essential thing. Being out there, an active participant in our outdoor world.

  1. Being 71 now with minor health issues that all in which generate sounds uncommon to the animal kingdom whatever species it is im hunting. Arthritis that makes me move every 2 minutes to relieve pain, nose runs constantly, coughing, urinating every 30 minutes, neck cracks an pops like a firecracker and relentless flatulence. I have to grab my cane an stand up every 30 minutes to rearrange knee pain so when I hunt it has to be from my pop out hub blind that I have to crawl into because I'm 6`5" and cannot bend over. It takes me 2 hours to pop out my blind using one hand because the other has a cane holding me up thank GOD I'm ambidextrous after that I have to remove all the clothes I can to quit sweating because I sweat worse than anyone you have ever seen them open my chair in the blind then the windows as the Velcro ripping echoes off the ridge tops. By then it's time to take one of my pills and eat some sardines, beenie weenies and a coke to get my sugar back up so I don't pass out. Now do you think I love to hunt or what. I was a 48 state trucker for 50 years and made sure I bought 4-wheeler, blind, 35 rifles and 35 shotguns all the ammo I would ever need all the camo coveralls an clothing, socks, gloves because I knew it would come the day I would have to crawl to my blind as I barely get my 4-wheeler off my trailer. It's a full blown production to go hunting for 6 hours which is too long for me now. I had to tell you that story what I go through to hunt each day as I have a problem sleeping even with sleeping pills and I don't get up until 9am or so and hit the woods about 1230 pm but PRAISE THE LORD I'm able to still do it even though I can barely get back in the house until 630 or 7 at night because I love it. I'm sorry to talk so much but my brother (best friend) and all my friends are gone all of them. All but one was a trucker as my brother and I trucked together for many many years. Sorry to talk so much like I said but I have no one to talk hunting or trucking now.

  2. Agree with using the binos in the woods. That’s how I got my biggest buck. Picked him up in the brush looking through the binos. That mage me a believer. I never go hunting without them on my chest now.

  3. Oddly, I find that if you're not moving slowly and quietly enough for a proper still-hunt, you're better off making all kinds of noise, sometimes even hooting and hollering like on a deer drive. The noise makes deer curious and I've seen quite a few that way when I was just trying to drive deer over to the rest of the hunting party.
