  1. As a PhD student rn, the only reason I can stay in academia is cause my husband has a better paying job. In Pennsylvania our salary is better than California but it’s only ~30k/yr. In my program we only get paid at the end of the month (only a day before rent is due), no parental leave, and barely any vacation days. And this is coming from a Bio student which have some of the best pay in academia

  2. The part of the Michigan story that was skipped is they had a citizen referendum pass in 2018 that created an independent committee to draw voting districts. This non-partisan redistricting is a factor in how Michigan was able to turn blue. Getting rid of gerrymandering is the best way to make more states blue. Ranked choice voting (although results take longer) also help people to vote on issues and candidates over just voting by party.

  3. “Convenience fees” used to mean something when buying a ticket online was the lazy person’s alternative to standing in line to get a wristband that gives you the chance to stand in another line to buy a ticket (thereby inconveniencing yourself)… but now that there is NO OTHER WAY to buy a ticket or pay a bill or do pretty much anything, they can take convenience fees and shove them!

  4. I LOVE McMorrow! I love that she's used her unexpected fame to push for greater change at the State level, and isn't doing the typical politician -y thing of pretending to run for one office while actually having an eye on something else. We need more state-level legislators who care like she does and who use their talents to improve and strengthen her community. All these amazing women winning in Michigan! 💖🎉

  5. As a grad student in a state school in the east coast where the living cost is pretty darn expensive but is still below California: I am paid slightly above $30k. It's definitely not much better, but hearing that UC grad students are paid $24k SHOCKED me. I acknowledge that many of my peers in other state schools have different experience, but California definitely needs to catch up with other states.
