I am so grateful for any support you choose to give, financial or emotional! 🙏 This week’s episode is about foraging for wild mushrooms and how I learned not to die by eating them. I studied a book and used it in conjunction with an app to help me identify mushrooms.

  1. Until I become more knowledgeable, I don't eat a mushroom until someone I know to be an experienced forager identifies it and verifies it. At this stage, I'm only confident personally with the safe and accurate identification of four mushrooms.

I've gathered a few specimens recently and I'm going to a local mycological society event next week to get them IDed.

  2. For the record, picking a mushroom will not hinder the growth. It’s simply the “fruit” of the entire organism.
Think of it as a tree, but the mycelium is the root system and the wood, the mushrooms are the apples. You can pick an entire tree if all viable fruit and it won’t hurt it, gonna drop it anyways.
There’s some superstition that you can tap the spores loose to help propagate

  4. a good way to forage mushrooms is to learn to identify a couple good common mushrooms and stick to them. for me the usual ones are golden chanterelles and funnel chanterelles. i'll also look for porcini but the worms almost always find them first.
