How Banana Boat Liners Developed the Modern Cruise Industry

Banana boats have disappeared from our culture outside of sunscreen, sundaes, and that one song from Beetlejuice. Look into them a little, they’re cool. Remember, I’m an idiot with a microphone, not an expert. Take all of this with a grain of salt.

  1. Someone should fly in tree ripened bananas to Canada. Our fruit all sucks here but we do get mangoes flown in and they’re delicious.

If that sells, maybe they could uproot the banana “tree” and ship bananas “on the vine” keeping the tree alive during transit so the bananas ripen naturally

  2. My dad sailed The Great White Fleet of United Fruit after the war. He said the ships were very well appointed and they took care of their passengers. He told me he would sometimes catch a boat down and then not even get off when they pulled into port to load. Then sail back. He said it was a great little vacation and it was affordable to a lot of people.

He was on LBJ's staff before and during the Korean War. One day as he was climbing up the gangway but John Foster Dulles. He saw my dad, shook his hand, introduced him to the officers. When the steward met him at his cabin he told him that Mr. Dulles had his cabin switched and he would be comping the passage.

My dad said that about a month later the Dulles brothers invited him to lunch. He said all they wanted to talk about was his trip and how was the food, how were the crew, and do they seem happy, and was the ship in good shape and stuff like that. My dad said they really cared about good service. As they were leaving, one of them took a card out and said, "If you ever want to cruise just call that number and it is taken care of." My dad said they seemed really nice, and then came Arbenz and they showed just how deceitful they could be." I asked him if he ever took any other trips after that and he said usually two or three times a year.
