Maresyev joined the Soviet Air Force, showcasing his skills as a fighter pilot in the 296th Fighter Regiment, which was later reformed into the 102nd Guards Fighter Regiment. His pivotal moment came in April 1942 during a dogfight against the Luftwaffe over Soviet territory. His plane, a Polikarpov I-16, was critically damaged, forcing him to crash-land in a dense forest.
