The Spanish found a lot more gold than they could move across the country on their horse & buggies. Too much weight and they would break wagon wheel after wagon wheel. So from time to time they would leave large quantities of gold behind. I have a feeling the attempted to hide it in most cases. The Spanish would also back fill at least the entrance to the mines they worked in attempt to hide it from others discovering it.
I've thought about giving up elk horn collecting and gold panning as a hobby to go search for Spanish gold bars. Out west you see piles of rocks stacked often. It could be a grave. Someone's horse died, their dog, their friend/relative. But it could also be gold bars down there. Maybe they would piles the rocks there so if they ever came back through the area they would be able to find the gold bars easily??? Need a small tractor with backhoe.
