Speaking personally, I prefer Etie to the other archer we get later on.
Something that still surprises me is that Alear's personal skill gives more damage than defense.
40:10 Even putting this aside, I'm not the biggest fan of this death. One reason is as others have said, it goes on for too long (and maybe if it was shorter, they could've given that time to the funeral), and the other is that it's too soon. It also doesn't help that with an exception later on, her death doesn't mean a whole lot after a few chapters.
9:30 – It's Himbo Dimitri! 34:44 – I really hope that cloaked figure doesn't emotionally destroy me with a reveal 7 or 8 chapters later. (I might have issues). 42:18 – The fact that only two of the 6 fire emblem games that are Japan only have been released really bugs me. I'm still hoping for Intsys to do what Square did with the Japan exclusive FF Games back in the PS1 days. 45:24 – Long as you don't pick up an apple from a stand and eat it without paying for it.
Tying back to what you said at the end, the best way to determine how good of a VA someone will be is how the act during another character's death. ESPECIALLY if that character was close to the VA's character.
Yeah, I agree that Lumera was handled a lot better than Mikoto, for a few reasons, one, for how short our time with her was, you get to know her a lot, both for who she was and her role (having her training/taunting you while playfighting with her helped a lot), second, she tried to take her murderer down with her, and third, they tried to heal her (wich very few stories I read/played try, is why I also like Galuf's scene in FF5), wich also revealed how far she went to bring you back.
As for the units, I had to drop Boucheron, he was useful early, but he was getting no much else beside hp, Etie is going well for me (just waiting for a brave bow), while Alfred was being carried just by being a high mov cavarly (and losing a lot of that utility after ch11), not helped by 2 better lance units you get later (in fact I'm considering benching him).
Now I'm past ch12, and it's full of dumb bastards (and I'm not talking about the enemies…).
It really hard to avoid spoilers when their thousands of videos on said topic. I was watching Chugga's Xenoblade 2 series and I was spoiled on something about Nia. Thanks, YouTube suggestions.
Alfred Is overall a good sigurd user, yes louis exists but the movement bonus of cavalry is pretty good in the early game and sometimes the defense of louis can be more of a problem and chloe is just better with Marth. His performance in solm is poor and theres not really a reason to use him but is not hard to get him back to the team with parthia abuse. I usually just focus in his strength so i can one round paladins and wolf Knights with the ridersbane which there are A LOT in the lategame.
1:52 Honestly having a choice to be the bad guy would be cool for fire emblem. I doubt they'll ever do it though… 17:19 Backup units certainly are powerful. I didn't use too many of them since I wanted a very versatile team but they do help a lot. 25:39 Yay Etie crit! Also nice. 26:21 Happens to the best of us. I'm really thankful for the new mechanic next chapter. 26:58 BK high hit % miss: 1 35:03 Bismix: Who left this sassy lost child in my game?! 46:11 So Lumera's death. It really doesn't work. 1. Both the player and Alear barely know her. 2. Alear caring a lot more than he should at this point creating a divide between him and the player. 3. The death is way longer than it needs to be. 4. I was laughing. At a scene that's tragic. 5. The death aside from a few moments is barely brought up later. While the voice acting was very good, to me it doesn't matter. Bad writing is bad writing. Like a car that looks nice but the interior is terrible.
Alfred I generally like. But his gimmick got old fast. Unlike the others, that is in most of his supports. Aside from a certain A support which he desperately needed. He's cool but can be a bit annoying. Unit wise he was very shakey but landed on soild. His promoted class skill came in pretty handy. He was on my main team.
Etie has the same problem as Alfred from what I've seen. Talking about muscles constantly. I did like her support with Clanne though. I really like how the localization gave her a tough girl voice. It fits very well. I didn't keep her since the recuit creep(as I call the large amount of characters you get in a short amount of time)kept happening and she got lost in it. I wanna use her properly someday.
Bouch has the same problem as the other two only with crying. Unlike the other two I ended up not caring for him at all. Hopefully with other supports he's better.đą I did use him a lot since after I dropped Vander, he was the only character with an axe. The moment I got (Jack and Sally's kid) I dropped him. He did help sweep the (Awakening) map so that was cool at least.
I've got to say. Etie has a very good design. She's buff but actually how women are, not looking like a dude. She's cute. Unfortunately her personality is literally just weight training and that is it.
New unit talk for today- Alfred- Someone who I have generally always liked as a character but sadly him along with him coming up in the next chapter where probably the biggest victim of deployment slot things that happen in this game lets say. On subject of his VA as well when I saw his name in the initial feh engage banner trailer and saw the Canadian work he tended to put in, I had the hope in me that Engage much like Dragalia Lost had some Canadian based VAâs in there especially when it was pointed out to me that there was already a lot of French pronunciations going on in the game seemingly at the time, but ig it was just not meant to be this time.
Etie- The MVP of my initial run of the game, she got blessed with the Speed and Str early on to already make that reason one to make me use her over the chapter 7 archer. As the game progressed I did end up reclassing her into berserker (a class which I donât recommend really running in this game btw) to kinda give her dream of more muscle and because I thought that class would retain its crit bonus for the class (which it didnât) but I still had a lot of fun running her with a brave axe, high HP, and a ch 8 emblem.
Boucheron-Not really gonna talk about him as a unit since he was one of the first to be benched for me personally but Iâm honestly kinda appreciative of how unlike a lot of the other early axe people you get in the series that feel like scatterbrained muscle people lets say on a first glance, Bouch takes a more calm and relaxed route with his personality.
I share the sorrow Alear felt when Lumera died, not because of her death itself, but because i was playing heroes at the time and while the cutscene played i sparked the wrong character by accident.
3:18 I remember this line all the way from the first trailer and people applying the Mob Psycho 100 "Why don't we stop talking for a while" meme to it.
8:33 I learned the hard way during my first playthrough that generally no you shouldn't sit on it and Engage ASAP because offensive momentum is that important.
11:28 Alfred I was prepped for out of the gate to bias a bit– being handed the Fensalir from the FEH stuff (that's a public free download now) and the DLC speedwing, but he ended up pretty solid on my first run besides that. Doing relay trials with friends had more than a few envious at how well-built and functional mine was.
13:56 Honestly, that's the cool thing about Engage– if you know what you're doing everyone is perfectly usable without much effort.
18:00 …Goddamnit it, I should've known that theme would be used.
Lumerra's death is so rushed over for how much she's retroactively dealt; it's just unfortunate.
9:38 This scene's resemblance to an XC2 rare blade awakening is just uncanny. Especially that lance twirl at the end, which I could just picture being the point where it transitions into his character art.
17:54 Speaking of Xenoblade, I love that you used XC3's chain attack theme here.
29:11 This really is the Xenoblade episode, isn't it?
Even though it was obvious what would happen to Lumera (especially if you've been playing the series for a long time now) this is pretty emotional to watch, Alear's VA did an amazing job here, it's not just sadness but frustration that's heard in their voice and the bargaining they do saying they'll fight to save the world but still wanting Lumera to not go…just gogdamn. (Also, this scene hits harder once you know about Alear's past)
I'm not a fan of how obligatory Lumera's death felt, but the voice acting of that scene was better than it really had any right to be. Looking in from the outside, I barely have any connection to these characters, but unlike many victims of fridging, the voice actors convince me that these characters DO care.
Alfred my boy why your starting speed so bad đ I'm so glad the DLC can fix him. Granted the DLC can fix everything but I'm still happy.
Speaking of, I splurged on DLC books for canter and went with bow knight Etie when I used her. I did NOT have confidence in those defensive stats for enemy phase đ. Buuut never putting her in harm's way in fear of death actually made her ideal for the Wind God ring later on, that was cool.
Boucheron is the one unit in the entire game I haven't used past early game, despite his usefulness as a chain attacker (or maybe because of it?). That HP is ridiculous. Good for wrath too. Axe crits can make up for average strength, probably.
Yes, of course, you totally meant to get Vander killed via chain attacks, I completely believe you.
Oh no, Lumera, the parent of a Fire Emblem Protagonist ™, is dead đ„ Who could have forseen such a thing?
alfred's start is the issue, and it taking time for him to be decent… when engague gives good units as you go that are usually better then the units you already have combined with the fact that build growths are so comically low make him… kinda bad.
etie's bld is a problem, yes, as well as her str at times…
bouche is interesting.
22:44 the combat animations for the game is amazing.
I think there are two main factors that really hold back Lumera's death. For one, she dies waaaay too early and I feel like Alear is way too sad for someone who supposedly has amnesia. It would've been more impactful if she died slightly later so that Alear has time to actually regain his memories and bond with his mother. Secondly, she dies way too easily, like you're telling me that this 1000+ year old dragon god dies just by getting zapped by a little lightning? I know she's supposed to have transferred all her power to Alear but even so, you'd think her 1000+ years of experience would let her put up more of a fight than just standing in lightning storm for a few seconds and firing a laser. In any case I think the voice acting for this scene is amazing and getting to fight Lumera near the end of the game is such a cool ass moment. Compared to Mikoto Fates, I would say they handled Lumera's story much better but I'm still a little biased because Corrin turning into a berserk dragon is metal af (even if Fates' story is actual dog crap)
And so, Lumera meets the fate of (almost) every FE protag`s parent, death. Heck, even IS knew everyone expected it, given it being the very first scene of the second trailer.
While she has a nice design and some nice characterization, her death happens too early for me to form a proper attachment to her. Her death scene is also too long for my liking, though Alear`s voice acting does help make the scene slightly better.
Alfred was a solid unit on both of my runs, though he had a similar problem to Eliwood when I played FE7. His stats were decent, but handily outclassed by other characters. Based on his first few supports, I expected to find Alfred an annoying gimmick character. However, he ended up having a surprising amount of depth.
Etie is a character I have used very little, so I have no real experience with her as a unit. Her character is alright from what I have seen.
Boucheron was a good unit when he actually hit his targets on my first run. He hit hard and doubled surprisingly often. His chain attacks, while hit or miss, were a nice help when they did hit. Character wise, I found him alright.
On my second playthrough, chain guards become a big help as enemies hit a lot harder later in the game.
41:35 I`m gonna be honest, I forgot they mentioned there being a funeral in this scene.
17:30 Hurray! I wasnât the only one who didnât get how chain attacks work when I first played!
Alfred and his retainers join! Funny enough, my memory of the characters that join from this chapter onward are fuzzy. I remember bits and pieces of them, but not much thatâs gained from support conversations. Looking forward to relearning about them all through your playthrough.
34:45 lol, âAnd suddenly, cloaked figure! With no introduction!â
Wow. Oh man. Oh jeez. Watching that whole scene with Lumera again⊠reminds me of the absolute amount of NOTHING I felt when I watched her die the first time. My god. Like, you know that feeling you get when you accidentally laugh at a joke that was in poor taste and immediately feel bad about it afterwards? That was me. I mean, all the ingredients were there for a tragic death and scene. The music was great, emotions ran high for the characters, and my goodness, the voice acting for Alear was ON POINT. Alearâs voice acting alone was what made my first time reaction to this scene merely a light snicker as opposed to busting a gut laughing. I never got far enough in the game, so as far as Iâm aware, this is the last we see of her. If it wasnât for Alear acting and feeling the way they did, Iâd see this queen as nothing more than a plot device, rather than a person. Especially since, wellâŠ
The other three FE games I finished did the family member loss better in my eyes. Emmeryn from Awakening would be the first (but not best) example. When she died, if Iâm being honest, I was more shocked than sad. I guess also because she was related to Chrom rather than Robin, so the connection wasnât as strong (Which is not to say that I didnât feel bad for Chrom and Lissa of course. I just didnât tear up or cry. My tearing up moment in Awakening was âMarthâ revealing their true identity) Plus, she does show back up via SpotpassâŠkind of⊠I mean you know how it is. Mikoto from Fates is the closest one to feeling like Lumeraâs death here, but where Mikoto has an advantage over Lumera is that Mikoto wasnât the only one who lost her life when Ganglari exploded, so that makes her more memorable. (Plus the fact that in Revelations you have to fight her, but I played that path in Fates the least so the fact that I remembered that you even fight her was very last minute)
Boucheron's personal skill is a nice bonus if you're stacking a lot of damage with other skills and stuff like brave weapons. And with a certain tool from a later Emblem it's basically guaranteed.
Alfred, Etie, and Boucheron three units that I never used for an entire run, they're not bad by any means but the amount of investment it takes for them to be good in comparison to later units is a little too much.
I see both Alfred and Boucheron just like I see Edward and Nolan from Radiant Dawn if their good growths gives them good level ups.
While Eite Str stat is her only selling point, promoting her into a good class like Warrior can't just fix all her problems.
I'm currently doing a draft run with my two of my friends and I have to use Boucheron so maybe I'll find some new appreciation for the him but for Alfred I once class changed him into a sword fighter then swordmaster and turned out good and Etie just always ended up on the bench so maybe it's meant to never be.
I didn't use the Alfred squad my first playthrough, but on my second run on Maddening Alfred and Etie have turned out pretty decent. Overall I want to use characters I didn't my first go around, which unfortunately means I'll be missing out on a lot of real powerhouses. In particular, a certain swordmaster and berserker will be missed.
The Lumera death scene is honestly one of my least favorite scenes in the game. Yeah, talk about the game starting on the wrong foot.
It feels like a parody of Mikoto's death from Fates. I can't really sympathize because we only knew Lumera for like 20 minutes before she dies and even then, her personality is blander than Mikoto's. And my God, do they drag this scene out for way too long! I remember getting so frustrated at how prolonged her death was that I got up, went to get some juice and she was still not dead by the time I got back. All I remember is the Switch going into power save mode during the cutscene. Even the console is falling asleep at this game.
Honestly, this was my first indicator that I was not going to like Engage all that much. It just feels all style over substance, at least to me.
Smiles in mounted unit this is where I shine. I LOVE mounted units for several reasons, but my main reason is there movement. Add on to the fact that, if every mounted class from every fire emblem game was in one game, you can fill every role with a mounted version. It means you can move quickly, and to quote a friend. "Get the job done before it's needed." Mounted units are pretty much my top tier unit type. With one particular class line being my absolute favorite.
25:37 Nice

Do you have a team composition in mind in this playthrought?
3:54 They usually have the life expectancy of a dead man, or woman as the case may be.
13:49 I've had him get Strength screwed a few times.
15:17 There is one easily obtained item that restores HP, if a little luck based. This would also combo well with a skill from the next Emblem.
19:51 Chain Attack Utility is the new Staff Utility.
26:29 That must have been frustrating.
30:05 If she knew who Effie is, she would take that as a major compliment.
39:48 This is why having a fully voiced Avatar is amazing.
46:44 Even when she's dying, Lumera has to be a cheesy mother.

Another day, another set of playables and voice actor trivia! Sorry for being slow on this-
Alfred: Shun Midorikawa/Kai Minasawa (World trigger)
Etie: Mikasa Ackerman (AoT) Rinka Hayami (Assassination Classroom)
Boucheron: Daruk & Yunobo (Legend of Zelda. BoTW & AoC)
And so, Lumera meets the fate of (almost) every FE protag`s parent, death. Heck, even IS knew everyone expected it, given it being the very first scene of the second trailer.

Wow. Oh man.
And then there is Three Houses. Honestly after hearing about your burnout of the game, I wanted to try very hard not to compare this game to 3H. But this is one instance I canât ignore. Jeraltâs death hit the hardest for me of the Fire Emblem games I completed. We got multiple chapters to get to know the man. We got to hear legends of his exploits. We got to fight alongside him (Despite his tragic disease simply known as NPCitus) We got to learn about him from other characters in detail. We really got to see him care for Byleth (Who was the very first âlordâ that I actually played with the default name and didnât self insert or make an OC). And We were forced to watch him die (twice technically). That scene is just so memorable for me, despite there being less dialogue in that scene than Lumeraâs death, which looking back on in comparison just dragged on. Also, Iâll admit as well that around the time I got to that point in 3H, we lost the man who would have become my father-in-law, so while Jeraltâs death hit me hard, it hit my fiancĂ©e even harder, especially since personality wise, Jeralt was a lot like her father.
So with Lumera, my reaction to her death was less âMan this is really sad, letâs go avenge her and stop the fell dragon!â And more âAnd thatâs another trope checked off from this Fire Emblem list of clichĂ©s. Well, letâs continue the gameâ. And I honestly do feel bad that thatâs where my opinion on this character stands as of right now.
Jesus I FORGOT that Lumera even HAD a funeral. Yeah, why was that just glossed over, anyway?
17:53 just couldn't resist use XC3 chain attack
2:34 considering we do have female Emblems, which we'll see, i can imagine they sleep with Alear and probably Cuddle them, which is cute in my head
I was pretty suprised at how fast this game drops the "tutorial early game" stuff and drops you into a real map
It just feels all style over substance, at least to me.
this is so much better. i always must ask why can't we have gotten then game instead of 3 houses atleast have that game cook more
Smiles in mounted unit this is where I shine.
