Dungeon Core is a roguelite top-down shooter where you get to explore the sewers and beyond to ultimately reach an old underground research facility. Old nuclear waste has caused dangerous mutations in creatures due to a failed experiment. You set out to destroy the abandoned nuclear core.

The Let’s Try series is a way to preview / review games in order to get my first impressions through the first moments of gameplay.

  1. Oh this looks very much like Gungeon, but I dunno about the aesthetics here.

Might just be because I'm so used to Gungeon and I'd get used to it, but idk if I'm a fan.

  2. It looks fun, but as far as metaprogression, arent the greatest roguelikes of all time the example to live by? Like Rogue, Isaac, Spelunky? Unlocks that add items/loot, sidegrades and complexity, then finally in the form of new characters and modes are the way to do it IMO. Needs an active reload probably too while we're being critical lol

  3. Hi Retromation. I'm making a free tower defense Rougelike for the playdate, but you will be able to play it on pc with a controller. Would you want to play it when it's further along?

  4. Yep, having dedicated currency for meta progression is a must.
And people who dont like meta progression can just ignore it altogether, I, on the other hand, love meta progression, the more there of it – the better. The moment there is nothing more to "lvl up" I ditch the game, since playing a game without any more progress to get in it brings me no joy.

  5. I feel like weapons could do well if they started reloading automatically, and while you can still use the other weapon. As it is now, it just seems like you have 2 weapon slots, but you skip having to switch between them, if that makes sense.

  6. A neat finding, this might be more up my speed than gungeon, I'm not that good with twin stick but the meta progression might be a bit of an issue. For a moment there, you had me thinking you'd clear this in one go!

  7. I hope the dev sees this video and decides to make it worth using 2 guns and maybe even punish for only buffing or using 1. It seems like the game would greatly increase in quality from that alone. The pixelart is cool though and the general vibe is pretty nice too. Just missing some gameplay polish.

  8. I have almost 800h in EtG and it's exactly as you said. The game looks really cool, but the meta progression is really dampening the hype for me. Especially because there's only one currency. In theory it's a neat mechanic to balance in-run upgrades with overall progress, but I think it would work a lot better with item unlocks instead of stat upgrades.
I get that as a dev you want to differentiate your game from other games of that genre, but EtG got that formula down so perfectly that I don't think it's a bad thing at all to be similar to it. That being said, I think the game is different enough already in other aspects that it would be an overall positive thing to mimic EtG's "meta-progression" angle.

  9. Looks to me like the intention was not to "dual wield" guns, but simply a way to keep more than one gun at a time in a somewhat realistic way. Just intended to keep two different weapons that might be useful in different situations.

  10. what a thumper, i kind of dislike this game. seems wayyy too inspired from gungeon and the meta progression is so bleh. its also just plain unoriginal.

  11. Hey Retromation, I was very excited when I saw this video pop up 🙂 I'm Filip, the creator of Dungeon Core. Your feedback is very valuable to me and I'll make sure that some of your points are fixed in the next update. Adding an option to disable camera shake is an easy fix and something that I for some reason overlooked. I'm looking into different ways to make it more interesting for veteran players and a solution could definitely also disregard the permanent upgrades (maybe a set of mutators so you could choose your own difficulty?). Thanks for the video and keep doing what you do! <3
