Electric Bikes From America, USA Factory Tour

Recently I visited the Electric Bike Company headquarters in Newport Beach California. This is an ebike company that actually builds a lot of their parts and assembles in America. They make their own wooden fenders, spoke their own wheels, pack all of the electronics, and even have a custom paint shop! I was blown away by the attention to detail, amazing warranty, battery repair facility, and the expertise that each of the 100+ team members offer. The company started in 2012 as Madiba Bikes and changed their name in 2012. They continue to work with a program called Wastepreneurs Independent trolley operators recycling trash in Southern Africa by donating electric drive systems. They have five buildings totaling 80,000 square feet. This is a company that I’ve visited and reviewed in the past, and their facility is even larger now. They have several buildings that each focus on a specific step in the process, or a specific bike model. This video was created for fun, for free, to share for anyone who cares about products that are actually from the United States.

  1. I'm glad to hear about the handlebar options. I asked about changing the handlebar in your previous video. The look a little too wide. I'll be checking out their website.

  2. To Be Clear, Here Is What The FTC Says About Claiming Made In The USA:
According to the Federal Trade Commission, "Made in USA" means that "all or virtually all" the product has been made in America. That is, all significant parts, processing, and labor that go into the product must be of U.S. origin. Products should not contain any — or only negligible — foreign content.

The alternative is to claim "Assembled in the USA" which is a legal statement that says you have assembled this product from imported components and may have introduced some Made in America processes, parts, and/or labor.

The Federal Trade Commission finalized a new rule that will crack down on marketers who make false, unqualified claims that their products are Made in the USA. Under the rule, marketers making unqualified Made in USA claims on labels should be able to prove that their products are “all or virtually all” made in the United States.

Commissioner Rohit Chopra was joined by Chair Lina M. Khan and Commissioner Rebecca Kelly Slaughter in a statement, which noted the rule will especially benefit small businesses that rely on the Made in USA label but lack the resources to defend themselves from imitators. The new rule codifies a broader range of remedies by the FTC, including the ability to seek redress, damages, penalties, and other relief from those who lie about a Made in USA label. It will enable the Commission for the first time to seek civil penalties of up to $43,280 per violation of the rule.

Suspect a violation? If you believe that a product promoted as "Made in USA" is not America-made or contains significant foreign parts or processing, file a complaint with the FTC. If you are aware of import or export fraud, call the U.S. Customs Service Commercial Fraud Hotline, 1-800-ITS-FAKE.

  3. Wonderful content Court. You have featured the Electric Bike Company over the years and it is interesting to see the evolution of this company and their products. Watching this one can appreciate the value of quality in the ebike space. I think that this video and his operation points out the difference between value and price. The addition of handlebar options makes these bikes more attractive to me as I have never been a fan of the swept back cruiser style of bars. An astounding level of customization!

  4. The manufacturing operation feels like a throwback to the 1950s in the US with everything made in house and not sourced from Asia. The owner is a good salesman with intimate knowledge of every part of the process. Very impressive – makes you want to buy one from them! Nice work here Cort!

  5. Nice to see their new expanded facility. Looks like more is getting done in-house and I can see why they feel confident enough to provide their long warranty periods!

Nice of them to share a peek into new developments.

I also appreciate they provide their people with safety gear in addition to the engineering controls.

  6. Someone should make a special bike as a Police Model. Custom secret motor and extra huge battery and controller. Painted in a police paint scheme. Special lights and cargo box and panniers for that extra equipment. 😁 instead of walking or using motorcycles on a beat they could have fast police bikes and jet to areas stealthy and fast if needed.

  11. Sold me on the custom wood work accessories. I want that nostalgia and vintage feel. Really cool to see they do all that from scratch. I like that personal touch, especially if they do repairs for idiots like me that like breaking things. The guy that put my bike together in the first place might be the right choice for putting it back together Lol
