Ebenezer Marsh's Review of The Christmas Markets of Edinburgh during a wander in early December 2022

I was in Edinburgh for the snooker and was temped to skip the city centre altogether, but just for you I went for a walk through the Christmas markets to see what they look like in daylight. Stay tuned until the end for a nighttime montage as well 🙂

I’ve never really been a fan of the Edinburgh markets, but I guess they work as they draw in people from around the globe and generate money for the local economy. So although I begin with a pessimistic expectation, will that change throughout the day? Join me to find out and enjoy the video…

Hi, I’m Steve, a travel reviewer from Scotland. Join me on my adventures as I discover my own country, often visiting places for the first time, so hopefully it’s as much of an eye-opener for you as it is for me! Don’t expect expert opinion, just a very honest journey of discovery. Sometimes featuring my intrepid sidekick Alicja, sometimes featuring adventures beyond the borders of Scotland. Enjoy!

  1. I keep saying to my family in Scotland that we'd love to experience a winter Christmas one day, but as I watched this in 23 degree sunshine I'm thinking "nah, you're all right thanks" 🤣🤣
You're right about the side streets and suburbs being better for shopping, I'm not into crowds either and the Edinburgh festival was challenging for us.
Thanks for braving the ferris wheel and filming the lights at night.
The local kids here have to stay up late to see the Christmas lights, as it's not dark till after 10pm at the moment.
    Lovely video, Steve 😊

  2. My initial reaction was, 'Oh no, not another Christmas market video', and I was going to skip it. But I should have known you better. I did watch after all and it was so much more than 'just another'. You nailed it again, and repeating the big wheel ride after dark was inspired.

  3. Another great video Steve. I don't know how you manage to film, present and edit such brilliant videos but every time I see a YouTube notification of a new video, I'm absolutely delighted.

  4. These "Christmas Markets" that have sprung up all over the shop in the last 10 or 20 years aren't for me . Overpriced tat and rip off food pitched at mug buyers.

  5. I think that piper only knows a few notes, I listened to him for over five minutes and he played the same notes over and over again! I hated the market. Not only did it rain all the time, but I couldn't move, so I went from one end to the other and out. The kids Santa Land is not so bad, if it was not for the Granddaughter, I would not have been there!

  6. I used to work around the corner from Castle Street in George Street until my employers sold the building and moved us to the far end of Gorgie Road. My job was then outsourced to Dopey Donald's French accountants who moved us a few miles east to Leith Walk. Thankfully, the Christmas markets hadn't started by the time I moved to Thailand to ,live some 17 years ago. Travel for me is not easy just bnow due to a stroke

  7. Edinburghs a firm favourite place to visit. I always just find there’s a certain buzz about the place. Calton Hill’s a great place, and I find it really nice to hear a variety of different accents from people across the world all enjoying themselves here.

  8. Yeesh, sounds like a very fertile breeding ground for covid / RSV / flu. Seems like everywhere is on the Christmas Market bandwagon nowadays. It was nice to experience it through your video, so that I could see some of the very attractive scenes and Christmas Lights. However, I really do not like crowds, so the evening must be an absolute nightmare. Hope you both have a great Christmas and New Year. Cheers!!!

  9. For an Edinburgh Christmas day trip, take the bus up through Morningside & Dreghorn to Colinton village. It’s got some lovely walks, pretty old buildings and a nice pub. Gorgeous when disted with frost, wreaths on the doors and can smell the fires going

  10. Steve, one of my very favourite places to go (which I try and make time for whenever I’m in Edinburgh), is the Susannah Stephen Memorial in Jame’s Court, Lawnmarket. It’s such a peaceful spot, away from the crowds. She loved travel (as we both do) and the words on the plinth I just think are really beautiful – ‘keep your face towards the sun & the shadows will fall behind you’. Magical.
