Does Saquon Barkley Have Any Leverage in New York Giants Contract Talks?

As the New York Giants and running back Saquon Barkley continue to work through their contract impasse, the assumption is the team holds all the leverage. But Emory Hunt of Football Gameplan and CBS Sports has a different perspective he shares with us. Plus, why has the running back market been trending downward over the years? And what does Emory think about the team after watching the New York Giants this spring?

  1. It wouldn't be a podcast if there wasn't some bullshit Jones hate. He's top 5 with no team around him. He'll be one of the lowest paid QBs this time next year. The kid can do it all with nothing yet they say he's some bum while they worship Hurts and Allen. Trade teams and tell me who's better. Till then, your hate unwarranted. Let's just give Barkley 16 a season when his only healthy year was his rookie season.

  2. I tuned out about half way into the show… maybe I missed the part where Saquon missed a good part of his playing career and that actually hurts his value (or leverage) a little bit. DJ is “mediocre” and GMs around the league are mad and recklessly throwing away money at such QBs. Also the “black QB” narrative was not needed here on the show… I hope Giants sign Barkley to a 3-4 year deal. I love him as a leader and obviously a weapon (when he is on the field). I don’t care about Mara’s money and a couple of million won’t matter ultimately in rebuilding this team… Keep up the great work PT and Go Big Blue.

  3. Pat i enjoyed your interview with Emory Hunt. The Giants will get Saquon signed by July 17th he is a lethal weapon and they need him to make playoffs. Jones and Barclay feed off of each other. Pat I agree with your comment that we have more firepower and our offense should be lethal. I agree with Emory that Barclay opens up a lot of opportunities for our new weapons to make players. Emery knows his stuff. I think Barclay should carry the ball between 15 to 20 carriers a game to stay fresh. Bottom line we need Jones and Barclay to play together they help each other. I disagree with Emory Jones will be a top 10 or better QB and he will take the Giants to the Superbowl as the Oline improves. Great video as always Pat looking forward to your next video. Go GMEN 😂😂😂😂😂

  4. Respectfully disagree here. Slayton, Campbell, Hyatt and even Smith is an upgrade over Marcus Johnson and Richie James who are practice squad quality WR.

You can have a less "explosive" RB in the backfield because the faster WRs we have on offense will offset that.

Mr. Hunt needs to rewatch our games and take the whole team makeup and see that the money paid to DJ is justifiable and a modest salary at that compared to the QBs like Herbert and Burrow when they are due.

We had a healthy oline, WRs and Saquon when DJ went down on 2021 and even with that we were QB sneaking on 3rd down. Let that sink in.

  5. Patti,
What a great episode. Emory brought up some great points and makes me rethink some long held beliefs while confirming others. I hope to see him back as a guest agan, maybe next preseason.

  6. As much as Emory seems like an informed individual, he is a Jones hater! Bring him back on one year from today and have him publicly apologize to the fans and Danny Dimes! Great show Patricia.

  7. Quarterback by committee…. now that is a different take. Interesting thought experiment. If that ever happens that could reduce the money that qb's make and the cap space they take up.

  8. Overall thought Emory had some very good takes, pointing out as of now the WR's we have on paper are 2's and 3's, and pointing out Lavon Bell's value to the Steelers, wasn't as great as Saquan's value is to NYG(ie Steeler had A.Brown, Jo Jo Schuster, 3 pro bowl lineman and Ben R(QB)). Disagree a bit on QB, You're QB needs strong character, not just physical skills especially in NY. DJ suited for that. Overall, Emory made a strong case that Saquan has leverage.

  9. Totally disagree with him. Giants priority was signing Jones and Lawrence which are more important positions then RB. If I was the giants I franchise tag Barkley next year also. Draft a RB in the later rounds. And move on from Barkley after 2025

  10. Giants need WHO? 😂 Barkley was phased out of the offense the second half of the season once Daboll realized they can succeed with Daniel Jones arms/legs. Does no one watch games anymore?

  11. Could do without the woke screed (available elsewhere)
Re: SB missing games, Schoen is clear this is a long-term rebuild so he’s not caving after a couple of losses – at that point use the money elsewhere & move on – let Saquon destroy his career

  12. Daniel Jones is am much better runner than Cousins. He does realize Daniel ran for over 700 yards last year and it wasn’t all in a straight line… sheesh! Sorry I know everyone has their opinion, but he never gives Daniel any credit or😣

  13. FYI….
    Kirk Cousins
    Comp% 65.9
    Yds 4,547
    Tds 29
    Ints 14
    Rating 92.5
Led them to a 13-4 record
All this with ine of the worst defense in the league

And we all know defense in post season wins games….so to put that on Cousins without context is some real BS.

You have to look at the analytics and its far easier to find starting RBs compared to starting QBs.
Tgats whybthe draft plays out usually the way it does.
So yes the runningback position has been devalued due to changes in how the game is played.

  14. Overall, I like Em, but he needs to get over the fact that the Giants drafted Daniel Jones instead of Dwayne Haskins. That's bothered him for years, and no doubt it "colors" his analysis. Pun intended. He also needs to understand that it doesn't matter what Barkley did last year, It should be obvious that the team is transitioning to an offense that's a lot less RB-dependent. They want to push the ball downfield, they've added size and speed to both their WR and TE units, in addition to bolstering their offensive line with an actual Center, not another OG conversion project. I like Barkley, and there's no question that the team would be stronger with him than without him…for this year and maybe next year, too. But resources are finite, Just how much is a RB worth in the modern NFL? The league has said not nearly as much as in the past. The Giants would be better served taking their cues from the league, not from overly emotional fans or pundits, especially those with an agenda.

  15. Mr Emory Hunt was on point with everything he said I fully agree. As a long time Giants fan I want to see my team win Barkley provides a higher chance of winning it's the facts they need to pay that man and move on already

  16. Pat!! Love your podcast and have and will continue to watch moving forward. I’ve enjoyed everything you put out. This cast was hard to get through and the further I kept listening the more brain cells I felt I lost. I know you have huge respect for Emory so this is nothing against you. I believe in hearing different perspective and expand my way of thinking, but Emory insights are so far are shallow, baseless, pandering and frankly lazy. He lost me in the beginning when he says covering 32 teams makes him unbiased to any one team. He’s basically passively aggressively said that content creators be it professional / amateur that focus on one team are bias and their opinions should not be taken seriously. When you have to put a person or others down to elevate yourself loses me. I understand because of your relationship with Emory that you’ll have him on again in the future, I hope it’s few and far between. (Also saying we need to invest more into QB carousel concepts had me🥴🤢🤮🤮🤦🏾‍♂️🤮🤮)
